ACP Workforce Summit: Internal Medicine for the Future of Health Care

Physician workforce changes, technology advances, and economic pressures are creating an imperative to embrace a new future for health care that will more efficiently use the expertise of internal medicine specialists and subspecialists. The ACP Workforce Summit is designed to inspire and energize this change in the medical community.
The workforce challenges:
- There is a rising demand for highly skilled general internal medicine physicians, especially among an aging population with complex chronic conditions.
- Very few internal medicine-trained residents stay in ambulatory primary care, preferring a subspecialty or hospital medicine career.
- Physician shortages are widespread in both general internal medicine and the subspecialties, making it harder for patients to access the care they need.
The opportunities for change:
- New models of care can improve efficiency, increase collaboration between primary care physicians and subspecialists, and reduce clinician burnout.
- Payment model reform, new technologies and other solutions are emerging to help address administrative burdens that drive young physicians away from internal medicine.
- At the ACP Workforce Summit, we’ll explore a wide range of innovations and consider how the medical community can break down barriers to widespread adoption of innovations that are demonstrating measurable success.
Organized by the American College of Physicians, the ACP Council of Subspecialty Societies and Jefferson Health System, this event is designed to catalyze the work of 25 medical professional societies towards establishing optimal use of the IM workforce. The summit will convene a diverse group of healthcare professionals, policymakers, advocacy groups, and thought leaders to learn, discuss, and identify opportunities to evolve Internal Medicine for the Future of Health Care.
