CME Requirements for:

Beginning June 27, 2023, the DEA will require a one-time attestation of 8 hours of training on management of substance use disorders (SUDs) prior to renewal of a DEA registration. Visit ACP’s Substance Use Disorder hub for more information on how to fulfill this requirement.

All North Carolina licensed physicians are required to renew their medical licenses each year by their birthday. Failure to renew may cause the physician’s license to be placed on inactive status. At least 60 hours of Category 1 CME relevant to the physician's current or intended specialty or area of practice every 3 years.

North Carolina requirements include:

  • Controlled substance prescribing practices, recognizing signs of the abuse or misuse of controlled substances and controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management (3 CME hours each renewal cycle)

Additionally, a physician who attests that he or she is engaged in a program of recertification or maintenance of certification from an ABMS, AOA or RCPSC specialty board shall be deemed to have satisfied his or her entire CME requirement for that three year cycle.  Details can be found here, page 2 under exceptions (c).
