ACP Maryland Chapter Early Career Physicians Committee

The American College of Physicians formed the National Council of Early Career Physicians (ECP) in June 2005. An Early Career Physician Physician is defined as a physician member of ACP who is within 16 years of graduating medical school. Reflecting this structure, the Maryland Chapter has an Early Career Physicians Committee to address the special needs and interests of this group.

Our mission is as follows:

To enhance the professional development and quality of life for young physicians, fostering their involvement in College activities, and ensuring their needs are being met.

The goals of the Maryland Early Career Physicians Committee are as follows:

  1. To establish and promote the highest clinical standards and ethical ideals in the work and professional lives of Early Career Physicians;
  2. To assist Early Career Physicians with their academic and professional needs;
  3. To recognize individual excellence and distinguished contributions of Early Career Physicians to internal medicine;
  4. To develop educational programs and products of interest to Early Career Physicians that will increase their likelihood of remaining in the College;
  5. To promote the development of programs for Early Career Physicians at chapter/state level;
  6. To encourage productive interactions and dialogues with Early Career Physicians in other medical specialty organizations on issues of common interest; and
  7. To incorporate diversity in the composition of the Committee and in its strategic objectives.

As Early Career Physicians, we represent the future of ACP and the field of internal medicine as a whole. Therefore, it is vital that we stay actively involved in College leadership and help influence the advocacy of the College and the future of this profession.

New Early Career Physicians Committee Leadership

The Maryland Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP) is excited to welcome the new leadership team of the Early Career Physicians (ECP) Committee. Dr. Sameer Khan and Dr. Alexander Reyes will serve as Co-Chairs, with Dr. Marc Kai, and Dr. Ram Bhutani serving as Vice Chairs. Together, they look forward to advancing the mission of the ACP ECP community through professional development, mentorship, advocacy, wellness, networking, and leadership opportunities for early career internists across Maryland.

Aligned with ACP’s national vision for Early Career Physicians, the committee aims to strengthen engagement at the chapter level, foster meaningful connections among physicians early in their careers, and create opportunities that support both personal and professional growth in internal medicine.

During their inaugural leadership meeting on May 26, 2026, the new ECP leadership team met with Maryland ACP Governor Dr. Janaki Deepak to discuss future initiatives and shared goals aimed at continuing the strong legacy of the Maryland ACP community while inspiring the next generation of physician leaders. Through collaboration, innovation, and shared passion for internal medicine, the committee hopes to further energize, inspire, and empower early career physicians throughout the state.  

Leadership Team

 

Sameer Khan, MD
Dr. Khan is a transplant hepatologist and an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Khan attended medical school at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York. Afterwards, he completed his internal medicine residency at the Yale School of Medicine where he was chosen as a chief resident. He came to Maryland to complete his fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology at Johns Hopkins where he subsequently joined the faculty. Dr. Khan is an enthusiastic medical educator. He is the Director of the GI/Hepatology course for Johns Hopkins medical students and serves as a faculty advisor to thirty students through their medical training. His clinical and research interests are in metabolic and cholestatic liver disease. As the Co-Chair of the Maryland ACP Early Career Physicians Committee, he is interested in developing opportunities for high-quality education, networking, and civic engagement."

 

Alexander Reyes, MD
Dr. Reyes is a graduate of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Ascension Saint Agnes in Baltimore Maryland, where he completed his training in 2025. He served as Chief Resident during the 2024 to 2025 academic year and was actively involved in the Chief Resident Association of Baltimore (CRAB). Upon graduation, he received the Resident of the Year Award. He currently serves as an Academic Hospitalist and Associate Program Director at his home institution. As an Early Career Physician, he is passionate about medical education, physician mentorship, wellness, advocacy, and building strong professional communities within ACP.

 

Marc Kai, MD 
Greetings! My name is Marc Kai, and I'm a Primary Care Internist at Mercy Family Care Downtown. We're also one of the Continuity Clinic sites for the University of Maryland Medical Center IM Residency program. I'm only a few years removed from residency, and happy to be a resource for anyone interested in either a community hospital setting or teaching/precepting! I'm also a PhD in engineering from life prior to medicine, and love nerding out about all things science!

 

Ram Bhutani, MD
Dr. Ram Bhutani is a Chief Resident at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and serves as Co-Chair of the Chief Residents Association of Baltimore (CRAB), leading regional initiatives focused on resident education, professional development, and inter residency collaboration. At Sinai, he was recognized as the Outstanding PGY-3 Resident for the 2025–2026 academic year. As Vice Chair of the Maryland ACP Early Career Physicians Committee, he aims to create meaningful mentorship pathways connecting chief residents, graduating trainees, and early career physicians, while expanding opportunities for leadership development, wellness, networking, and physician engagement across Maryland."
