Maryland ACP is committed to helping International Medical Graduates (IMGs) achieve their goal of practicing medicine in the United States while ensuring their unique needs and concerns are heard and addressed.  Our goal is to support IMGs at every stage of their journey by engaging members through events, workshops, mentorship opportunities, and networking initiatives, are geared for IMGs.

One of the most important steps toward residency placement is gaining meaningful U.S. clinical experience, with many medical student rotations or sub-internships requiring an admissions process or high fees. To help make these opportunities more accessible, our IMG Committee is working to connect International Medical Graduates with local physicians and expand professional networking opportunities by developing a pilot program to help minimize these barriers.

we are pleased to introduce our 2026-2027 IMG Committee co-chairs:

Dr. Heranmaye “Heera” Prasad
Dr. Prasad is Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center's first endocrine hospitalist. She was part of the inaugural class of internal medicine residents at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Roanoke, Virginia, and then graduated in the first cohort of endocrinology fellows from Sunrise GME Consortium in Las Vegas, NV. Her journey through medical training as an international medical graduate consisted of challenges and triumphs that equip her with confidence and experience to share with others as they navigate similar territory. Her leadership through Maryland ACP serves as a platform to reach early career clinicians and IMGs for social and professional collaboration, as we all work together to enhance quality of healthcare delivery throughout the state.

Dr. Varun Lakhmani
Dr. Lakhmani is an MBBS graduate from Calcutta National Medical College. He completed his internal medicine residency at University of Maryland Midtown Campus. Currently he works as a primary care physician at an FQHC.  He believes healthcare is a human right, and everyone should have access to care. He also practices HIV and addiction medicine, and is currently in the process of obtaining his HIV specialist credentialing by the AAHIV.  Being an IMG himself, he hopes to bring forward radical and bold ideas to help people who were once in his shoes to have an easier transition to residency and into their careers here in the United States.
