Council of Resident Members (COR)

Overview

The Council of Resident Members (COR) represent resident physicians within the South Carolina Chapter of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The council serves as a liaison between Internal Medicine residency programs and the Chapter’s leadership, ensuring that residents remain informed and engaged with Chapter activities and initiatives.

Composition

In accordance with the Chapter Bylaws, each Internal Medicine residency program in South Carolina may appoint up to three representatives to serve on the Council of Resident Members. Programs are encouraged to select one resident from each year of training (PGY‑1, PGY‑2, and PGY‑3) to ensure representation across all levels of residency.
Representatives typically serve for the duration of their residency training unless their term ends earlier by decision of the member or their home institution. If a member’s term ends before completion of training, the respective residency program may appoint a replacement. All COR members must maintain Resident membership with the American College of Physicians (ACP) during their service.

Leadership

The Council elects a Chairperson from among its members each year, preferably rotating the role among the participating residency programs.

Purpose

The Council of Resident Members supports the Chapter by:

  • Promoting Resident membership and engagement within the South Carolina Chapter of ACP
  • Serving as a communication link between residency programs and the Chapter
  • Informing residents about ACP programs, activities, and initiatives
  • Encouraging participation in Chapter events, educational opportunities, and leadership development

Meetings

The Council of Resident Members meets at least twice annually to discuss initiatives, share updates from residency programs, and identify opportunities to strengthen resident involvement in the South Carolina Chapter.
