Awards Consideration

So many of our members are doing outstanding work, and thus deserve recognition! Do you know someone who should be nominated for an award? National ACP has several awards with varying criteria. 

Mastership (MACP®)

ACP Bylaws state that Masters shall be Fellows who have been selected because of “integrity, positions of honor, eminence in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” Masters must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating eminence in practice, leadership, or in medical research. Evidence of their achievements can come from many types of endeavors such as renown within their field and/or ACP chapter, research, education, health care initiatives, volunteerism, and administrative positions.

John Phillips Memorial Award for Outstanding Work in Clinical Medicine

This award is bestowed for outstanding, lifetime work in clinical medicine which has been innovative and/or had a regional or national impact.

James D. Bruce Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Preventive Medicine

This award is bestowed for distinguished contributions in preventive medicine. Preventive medicine shall be interpreted to include any subject bearing on the prevention of disease.

Alfred Stengel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the American College of Physicians

This award is bestowed for outstanding service to the American College of Physicians.                                   

Harriet P. Dustan Award for Outstanding Work in Science as Related to Medicine

This award is bestowed for outstanding work in science as related to internal medicine.

Edward R. Loveland Memorial Award for a Distinguished Contribution in the Health Field

This award is bestowed to a layperson or lay organization for a distinguished contribution in the health field.

Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award

The award is bestowed upon a Fellow or Master of the College who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the acclaim and accomplishments of former students who have been inspired and have achieved positions of leadership in the field of medical education, primarily as teachers.

Ralph O. Claypoole Sr. Memorial Award for Devotion of a Career in Internal Medicine to the Care of Patients

The award is given to an outstanding practitioner of internal medicine who has devoted his or her career to the care of patients.

Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award for Scholarly Activities in the Humanities and History of Medicine

The award is given for outstanding scholarly activities in history, literature, philosophy, and ethics and contributions to humanism in medicine.

Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians

The award is bestowed upon a Member, Fellow, or Master of the College who has consistently volunteered his or her services to teach medical students and residents outside of his or her academic responsibilities.

Joseph F. Boyle Award for Distinguished Public Service

The award is bestowed upon a current or former government official or a physician acting in an official capacity (state or federal, executive or legislative) who has provided outstanding public service toward improving the delivery of health care. (NOTE: chosen by HPPC)

Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service

The award is bestowed upon an ACP Medical Student Member, Associate, Member, Fellow, or Master who has initiated or has been involved in volunteer programs or has provided volunteer service post-training. The service must have been performed on a completely voluntary basis and not for the completion of training or position requirements, and must have been done as a physician or medical trainee and be medically related.

Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award

The award is to be given to an American physician who has made a major contribution to the science of patient care in activities that Dr. Feinstein has broadly defined as clinical epidemiology or clinimetrics, involving the direct study of patients’ clinical conditions. This award is given every other year.

Walter J. McDonald Award for Early Career Physicians

The award recognizes outstanding achievement by a physician member who is within 16 years of graduating medical school and who is not an ACP Medical Student Member or Resident/Fellow Member.

Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Award

The award recognizes a Resident/Fellow member of the College who has demonstrated qualities that exemplify the College’s mission “to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.”

Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator

The award recognizes an ACP member who is an internal medicine interest group leader, clinical clerkship director, program director, or faculty member (no higher than the level of an associate professor of medicine) who spends a significant amount of time teaching medical students.

W. Lester Henry Award for Diversity and Access to Care

The award is given to an ACP member with outstanding accomplishments in advancing diversity in clinical medicine or research, and/or access to care in relation to diverse populations. “Diverse populations” are understood to include: 1) economically or socially disadvantaged patient populations, for example, minorities, immigrant groups, or the homeless; and 2) groups underrepresented in the healthcare workforce.

Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes

The award is given to a member of the American College of Physicians or to an organization that has made important health care delivery innovations for diabetic patients resulting in improved clinical or economic outcomes; or a member of the ACP who has conducted research that significantly improves quality of care or clinical management of diabetes.

ACP Award for Distinguished Contributions to Behavioral Medicine

This award recognizes an individual who has furthered the care of patients by recognizing the importance of caring for the whole patient, both mind and body. This can be through research or clinical innovations.

ACP Award for Outstanding Educator of Residents and Fellows

The award recognizes an ACP member who is a distinguished faculty member who spends a significant amount of time teaching residents and fellows.

ACP Award for a Distinguished Contribution by ACP National or Chapter Staff

This award is bestowed to a former or retired national or chapter staff member of the American College of Physicians for distinguished contributions to ACP.

Steven E. Weinberger Award for Physician Executives/Leaders

This award is bestowed to a physician executive or leader of a national or international medical organization for distinguished contributions to internal medicine or significant impact on improving healthcare and/or medical education beyond a single institution or health system. The physician executive/leader should be a full time employee, not serving in an elected position.

Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell Award for Outstanding Contributions to Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine

This award is bestowed on an ACP member for distinguished contributions to advancing the careers of women in medicine. This award recognizes an individual who has furthered the careers of women medical students, residents, and/or physicians through mentoring and leadership development for the career advancement of women.
