Message from the Governor: Introducing Dr. Mary Tipton

Hello my fellow Internal Medicine Physicians. I am honored to be your Governor. The last few months have been inspiring and challenging as I learn how best to lead the 860 physicians in our chapter. First, a little about me:

After growing up in Alaska, and getting a chemical engineering degree in Tucson, Arizona, I came to the School of Medicine at the University of Utah. Physicians like Dr. Corwin Edwards and Dr. Scott Woller inspired me to study internal medicine, but I added pediatrics because I could not give up babies. I graduated MedPeds at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio but came back to work in Utah for the last 20 years.

I am a primary care physician and an owner of a private practice in South Jordan, Utah for 18 years. I was blessed with great partners and even better patients, however, every year it was more paperwork than patients, more hassle than healthcare. In 2024 I finally had enough of a healthcare system that prioritizes profits over patients and pushes physicians to the brink. I chose to leave the insurance system and opened a direct primary care practice in West Jordan Utah.

Direct primary care (DPC) is a membership-based model providing comprehensive care with a focus on easy access to a trusted physician. The monthly subscription is paid directly from the patient to the physician, eliminating all middlemen and interference in the physician and patient relationship. Entrepreneurship is hard and startups are financially challenging but I can confidently say I will never go back. I will never again be at odds with my patients, forced to make decisions that benefit a third party and rush visits and compromise care. The high-quality care I provide to my families is intensely rewarding.

That leads me to the ACP, an organization that fights for patients over paperwork, physician led care and payment reform. My goals for our chapter are many and I need your support. Please reach out to me at governor@utahacp.com

Here are a few ideas for your next email to me. Hope to hear from you soon.

  • Ways the ACP chapter can better support you
  • List your interests and desire to contribute, even if it's an hour a month you have to spare
  • Tell me the name of your fellow internist who may benefit from joining ACP
  • Volunteer yourself to be a Well-being champion for the chapter (training included)

Committee Update: Noorda Medical Student Interest Group

Noorda-COM just graduated their first class with a 99% match rate including lots of Internal Medicine spots. Their IMIG has a few events in the works for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Mid-September, Noorda-COM will host its annual club fair where OMS-I students can learn all about the club and have the opportunity to join. There will be interactive activities at the fair where students will learn about the Noorda COM IMIGs goals and mission and get a few giveaways while they are at it.

Noorda's Flu Shot Clinic will be in October, supervised by Dr. Rhodes, MD, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, who will provide training and oversight of the operation.

Noorda-COM IMIG is also set to collaborate with other interest groups at the school such as, EMIG and AMWA, to plan and host events such as a “Stop the Bleed” workshop and a Central Line workshop.

On Oct 21st, Dr. Mary Tipton will be speaking to the IMIG on the Noorda campus about all that ACP has to offer.

Please check out their Instagram @noordacom_imig to stay updated!

The ACP Utah Chapter Health and Public Policy committee will be hosting a webinar on October 13, 2025 at 6PM MDT. Our panel will review the history of Medicaid funding, both state and federal and how cuts to Medicaid could impact rural healthcare. Medicaid is the United States' largest health insurance program.   Advocacy Update: ACP works to Preserve Evidence Based Vaccine Recommendations

ACP is very concerned about the current confusion and hesitancy regarding vaccines. Our ACP President Jason Goldman is a liaison to the ACIP so he knows how the ACIP and CDC were designed to evaluate and recommend vaccines for America. He has spoken out strongly against the current HHS secretary's decision to remove members from the ACIP and disrupt the process of vaccine approval at a critical time for seasonal vaccines. You can read more about the ACP position on vaccines and get some resources for vaccine hesitant patients and find ways to advocate on these issues HERE.

  Congrats to our Newest FACP!

Sujata Devi Kaushal, MD FACP

Paul T Jensen, MD FACP

Congratulations to the Chapter's new Fellows. Fellowship in the College is an honor. Being an FACP® is a distinction earned from colleagues who recognize your accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine. The most important considerations for ACP Fellowship are excellence and contributions made to both medicine and to the broader community in which the internal medicine physician lives and practices.

We welcome nominations for fellowship. Even if it is just the name of your colleague, email it to contact@utahacp.com we will help you submit the nomination.
