Dr. William Fox presents: Why Doctors are Paid they Way They are and Why You Should Care

In this webinar, Dr. William Fox, MD, MACP and Chair Emeritus of the ACP Board of Regents will discuss the topic of physician payment.
The United States spends about 5% of total health care dollars on primary care, despite the fact that primary care accounts for 48% of physician office visits each year and influences up to 90% of total health care costs--through referrals, testing, procedures, and hospitalizations--and despite the fact that primary care is the only specialty whose utilization is shown to be associated with decreased health expenditures, higher patient satisfaction, fewer hospitalizations and emergency department visits, and lower mortality.
Dr. Fox will present the historical context of physician payment and the process by which codes are valued by the RUC (Relative Value Update Committee) and the limitations of an FFS system. Attendees will gain better understanding of how physicians and medical care is reimbursed, thereby filling a knowledge gap that can improve the quality of care they provide patients.

2026 Call for Abstracts
The portal is now open for the 2026 Student & Resident Abstract Contest. Abstract submission deadline is Monday, September 7, 2026. Virtual competitions will be held on Wednesday, October 14 for Students and Wednesday, October 21 for Residents. Finalist presentations will be during the Chapter Scientific Meeting on Friday, November 13 at Omaha Country Club.
