Message From Your Governor
Esteemed ACP Ohio Chapter colleagues,
The Fall is almost here, and of course, bringing gorgeous and breathtaking sceneries across all our beautiful parks. I hope that all of you take time to enjoy along with your families the myriad of hiking trails and the beautiful landscapes we have in Ohio. The first thing in wellness is to take care of ourselves and our families, which allows us to thrive and build strength to focus on our daily challenges in Medicine.
I want to share with you that the upcoming Scientific meeting, that we are organizing in a joint effort with the Air Force Chapter, will be a fantastic academic, leadership and networking experience. We have lined up superb speakers and topics. The agenda is available here
We are privileged for having world class Internal Medicine experts statewide - which is the strength of our chapter; I want to warmly and enthusiastically invite all of you to register to our meeting and not only take it as an opportunity to learn, but to engage with our brilliant colleagues from other institutions and areas in the state, as well as with our fantastic Air Force colleagues, to return back home energized, engaged and motivated.
I also want to share a new innovation. We want YOU to be the speaker. You will receive an invitation to submit your proposal for the Annual meeting in 2024. These can be individual topics and workshops. Our scientific committee will vote on these topics to select speakers for next year. This is an outstanding opportunity to allow you to engage as a speaker, and to develop your regional and national reputation for academic development and career advancement. We truly hope to receive many submissions and look forward to learning from you.
At the annual meeting, I plan to share with you all our ideas and work in progress. However, one of these you may already have received a communication about - these are monthly webinars, which will be a phenomenal longitudinal learning experience that will have different topics and agenda (clinical, leadership, advocacy, as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness, etc.) - we start in September with a webinar on ChatGPT in Healthcare by a recognized expert in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Dr. Aziz Nazha; in October, we launch our series of Leadership development with our esteemed colleague and Chair of the Board of Regents, Dr. Eileen Barrett. The invitation to be a webinar speaker is there as well. Submissions of topics and interest to present are also welcomed and can be an additional experience for outreach.
I hope to see all of you in Columbus next October 19 and 20. It will be a great opportunity to meet and greet new and old friends and colleagues.

Ohio/Air Force Combined Scientific Meeting
Registration Is Now Open!
The 2023 Ohio/Air Force Chapters Scientific Meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, October 19th, and 20th at The Greater Columbus Convention Center. Please register for two days of learning and collegiality! New this year is Story Slam on Thursday evening and trivia across both days of the meeting. Returning favorites are Drs. Dilemma, Thieves' Market and our popular 5k Fun Run on Friday morning.
We have a block of rooms available at the Hampton Inn across the street from the convention center. You can visit the meeting hub and register here
Governor's Advisory Council
During the Business Meeting being held on Thursday, October 19th, those present will be able to vote on openings for the At Large Members of the Class of 2026. Eligible for re-election are Stephanie Zaugg, Katherine Schmidt, and U. Gordon Iheme.
We will also accept nominations from the floor for vote.
Ohio Chapter Webinar Series
Our Chapter is beginning a monthly webinar series which kicks off on September 14th at 7:00 pm EST with Dr. Aziz Nazha, an AI expert speaking about ChatGPT in Healthcare. If you wish to attend, please rsvp to Jan Wrassman to receive the Zoom link.
Call For Speakers for the 2024 ACP OH/AF Chapter Meeting
Do you have an innovative topic or workshop that you would like to share with your colleagues? We will be accepting proposals for the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting. The deadline to submit your proposal will be November 2023. Our Planning Committee will review all submissions and you will be notified by January of 2024 if you have been selected as faculty for next fall. Please watch your inbox for more information.
Leadership Day
We would like to share a couple of experiences shared by attendees of this year's Leadership Day on Capitol Hill. We hope you enjoy reading about their time spent speaking to our representatives.

In May, I had the opportunity to lobby with physicians on Capitol Hill for ACP's Leadership Day. We discussed several bills with staff members of the House and Senate regarding increasing the primary care physician workforce, deferring medical student/resident debt payment and interest until after residency, and increasing Medicare reimbursement rates in accordance with the Medicare Economic Index. We also attended panels and workshops that equipped us with the skills and knowledge to speak cohesively as an organization to these issues on the Hill. Through this experience, I learned that although it may seem difficult to make meaningful changes to policy, advocacy efforts in any shape or form are extremely important and necessary. Advocacy comes in many forms such as reaching out to local representatives, hosting workshops to spread awareness about a topic, or drafting resolutions. As medical students and physicians, we have the perspective to serve as a voice for our patients and colleagues and can have a great influence on the decisions made in healthcare policy. I am grateful to have been a part of ACP Leadership Day 2023 as it showed me a new side of medicine to appreciate and to continue to be involved in.

ACP Leadership Day 2023 proved to be a truly enlightening experience, expanding my knowledge of public policy's impact on primary care accessibility. Throughout the event, the American College of Physicians (ACP) demonstrated its unwavering commitment to improving access to primary care services for all individuals, highlighting advocacy's pivotal role.
Leadership Day gave me the opportunity to engage in discussions with Ohio legislators and senators I had never imagined possible. My advocacy efforts focused on improving access to adequate primary care for my patients and improving the quality and quantity of the future resident workforce. In light of the current healthcare policies which affect patients, I recognize the importance of staying informed. Actively participating in sessions focused on legislative initiatives, community engagement, and collaboration with policymakers gave me the knowledge and skills I needed to advocate for policy change, both locally and nationally, for primary care services that are more accessible to vulnerable groups. The event also allowed me to network with like-minded individuals who share the same passion for improving access to primary care. I had the chance to connect with experienced physicians, policymakers, and fellow medical students from Ohio and all over the nation, fostering meaningful relationships and building a strong network of advocates.
Overall, ACP Leadership Day 2023 proved to be a transformative experience. It profoundly
shaped my understanding of public policy's crucial role in improving primary care access. As a healthcare provider and leader, I aim to make healthcare equitable for everyone.
ACP 2024 Health Policy Internship Application Cycle Now Open
ACP is now accepting applications from medical students and residents for the 2024 Health Policy Internship Program, which will take place April 29 through May 23, 2024. The ACP Health Policy Internship provides a multifaceted opportunity to learn about the legislative process, health policy, and advocacy in organized medicine.
One resident/fellow and one medical student will be selected to work in ACP's Washington, DC office with governmental affairs and public policy staff. We encourage you to share this opportunity with any students and residents who may be interested. The application closes on October 31, 2023. ACP Now on Threads Social Media Platform
The American College of Physicians (ACP) and Annals of Internal Medicine have established new branded social media presences on Threads, a new platform launched by Meta on July 6, 2023. Threads is Instagram's real-time texted-based conversation app and is connected to your Instagram account. The goal of this app is to share updates and join in public conversation. Threads is being positioned as a direct competitor to Twitter because it has a similar interface. It's had a more successful adoption rate than other new platforms that have been introduced over the past year, with more than 99 million users signing up for Threads to date in the short time it's been launched.
If you have an Instagram account and are interested in joining Threads and following ACP and Annals, you can sign up by going to the app store and downloading Threads. NOTE: A Threads account is connected to your Instagram account. Deleting your Threads account will delete your Instagram account. However, you can deactivate your Threads account and hide your Threads profile and content which will not impact your Instagram account.
ACP and Annals will be posting news and information there in an ongoing manner similar to our other social media accounts
