Bradley M. Sutter, MD, FACP, ACP Governor

Greetings, Indiana ACP membership:

While a welcome peek at Spring has recently provided us with warmer temperatures, sunny blue skies, and daffodils peeking up through the cold ground, winter is still trying to maintain its icy grip in late March 2021. Nonetheless, since my January 2021 Governor's update, we have much greater hope that the widespread availability of the various FDA-approved COVID19 vaccines will greatly accelerate our return to a more “normal” life, both in our medical practices and in our daily lives. My review of the latest Indiana COVID19 statistics reveals that 1.3 million Hoosiers have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 870,000 have completed their vaccination requirements. Even better is the fact that over 60% of Indiana citizens over the age of 60 have been fully vaccinated. This is encouraging news and lends an even greater sense of hopeful anticipation to the beginning of the end of the pandemic.

April also heralds the onset of a flurry of local ACP Chapter and National activities, including our Education Committee's initial planning effort for our November Chapter Meeting; and our Health and Public Policy Committee's gathering to review your feedback and provide additional perspectives on the 13 Resolutions to be considered at the upcoming (virtual) Board of Governors Meeting April 25th-28th. Lastly, and importantly, I encourage you to please join thousands of your ACP professional colleagues for the all-virtual Internal Medicine Meeting 2021 , to be held April 29th through May 1st. The CME content will again be outstanding, and the 1st Plenary Session will be conducted by none other than our own Dr. Anthony Fauci, MD, MACP. I also want to highlight that ACP National has announced that members who pay their yearly dues in full prior to March 31, 2021, will have the chance to receive a complimentary copy of the new MKSAP 19 Digital.

ACP is continuing to focus on physician wellness during the month of April, with the first in a series of Wellness Series Healthier, Happier, Connected begins on April 1st. Also, our Women in Medicine group will have a Gender Equity virtual session on 4/21 at 8PM EST. Another important reminder goes out in April to our Indiana Chapter medical student and resident members from our Indiana Chapter Executive Director, Colleen Keeku, calling for abstract submissions for the upcoming Chapter Meeting and Poster Session to be held in late November. All in all, April promises to be a very active and inspiring month in the life of our Indiana Chapter.

Lastly, I want to once again salute all of you for your longstanding efforts to provide state-of-the-art care to all COVID19 and non-COVID patients throughout the pandemic. Your work has saved countless lives. The Indiana ACP Chapter also reaffirms our pledge to stand with each of our communities of color, which have been disproportionally and adversely affected by the pandemic. We are horrified by the recent rise in pandemic-related hate crimes and racist rhetoric directed at our fellow Asian-American citizens. The Indiana ACP Chapter strongly supports and adheres to the ACP National Policies addressing endemic racism, and the ongoing efforts to achieve equity, diversity, and inclusion for all. You can find more information regarding these ACP policies here.

In this season of hope and renewal, I wish each of you wellness and peace.

Sincerely, Bradley M. Sutter, MD, FACP Governor, Indiana Chapter

As part of ACP's Well-Being and Professional Fulfillment initiative, ACP has launched a collection of resources aimed at helping members improve their emotional well-being. As a recognition of the unprecedented stresses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to internists and internists-in-training, ACP created the I.M. Emotional Support Hub to offer curated resources and information to protect physicians' emotional health and sustain ACP members' ability to care for those in need.

Resources include easily-accessible peer-support through the Physician Support Line and free and affordable, confidential counseling through The Emotional PPE Project and The Therapy Aid Coalition
