Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell Award for Outstanding Contributions to Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine

This award is bestowed upon an ACP member for distinguished contributions to advancing the careers of women in medicine. This award recognizes an individual who has furthered the careers of women medical students, residents, and/or physicians through mentoring and leadership development.

Mastership (MACP®)

ACP Bylaws state that MACPs shall be Fellows who have been selected because of “integrity, impact in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” MACPs must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating impact in practice, leadership, health policy, or in medical research. Evidence of their achievements can come from many types of endeavors, such as renown within their field and/or ACP chapter, positions of honor, research, education, health care initiatives, volunteerism, administrative positions, care of patients, and service to their community. ACP involvement is highly valued though not required. ACP involvement may include, for example, service to the College in an official capacity, participation in chapter activities, participation in College committees, and involvement in the development of College educational programs.

 2025 Chapter Excellence Award-Gold Level Winner

(September 2025) We are pleased to announce that California Northern, California Region 1, California Region 2, and California Region 3 are all recipients of the Gold Level of the 2025 Chapter Excellence Award! The award recognizes truly extraordinary chapters that surpass excellence in chapter management. We are in the company of 68 other outstanding chapters. In order to achieve the Gold Level of the Chapter Excellence Award, chapters must meet 22 Bronze criteria, 12 Silver criteria and 25 Gold level activities. Criteria include such activities as having a legislative action plan or agenda, holding a volunteerism/community service activity, holding multiple stand-alone meetings, having revenue sources outside of dues and meeting registration fees, implementing a strategic plan, implementing a formal recruitment and retention plan and measuring outcomes, conducting various activities for Medical Students, Residents and Early Career Physicians. We would like to extend a special thanks to those chapter members who assisted us in all of these endeavors! For their hard work and dedication, we received this award.

The first MACP in the College was presented in 1923 to Dr. James M. Anders, who served the College as President for two terms. He was recognized for extraordinary service to the College and for being one of the most outstanding internists and medical teachers of his day.

The Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teach Award is bestowed upon a FACP or MACP who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the accomplishments of former students.

(August 2024) We are excited to announce the launch of our Advocacy Toolkit: Using Your Voice as a Physician Advocate, a powerful resource designed to equip medical students and physicians with the skills and knowledge needed to become effective advocates for health care in their communities. This toolkit comprises five self-contained and independent modules, each presented as engaging voice-over PowerPoint presentations. Whether you're a seasoned advocate or new to the field, these modules offer valuable insights and practical guidance.

BOR Action on Spring 2024 BOG Resolutions

(May 2024) A summary of Board of Regents (BOR) actions on resolutions debated at the Spring 2024 Board of Governors (BOG) meeting is now available. Resolutions initiated by ACP members and endorsed by a chapter council and the BOG become ACP policy when adopted by the BOR.

If you have an idea you would like to suggest to ACP, consider submitting a resolution to your Governor or local ACP chapter. Visit the advocacy section of your ACP chapter website for more information on how to propose a resolution.

2024 John Tooker Evergreen Awards

(April 2024) The John Tooker Evergreen Awards Program provides opportunities to recognize the valuable contributions of ACP Chapters as they strive to enrich, educate, and engage membership. In 2024, ACP recognized ten winning chapters. Our Chapters received the 2024 John Tooker Evergreen Award for our initiative, Narrative Medicine Collaboration (California Southern I, II, III) and Live Your Best Life Program (California Southern III, a joint program with the North Carolina Chapter.

Narrative Medicine Collaboration  

New narrative medicine programming and scholarly activities have generated excitement and engagement from all membership classes across Southern California Chapters. We capitalized on this to create a supportive and welcoming community for those that enjoy the power of stories, reflections, and creativity through a narrative medicine competition in conjunction with the 2022 Southern California Chapters’ Annual Meeting. The Chapter has threaded narrative medicine events throughout the year to incorporate distinguished faculty and well-being champions as judges, mentors, and collaborators. Unique partnerships and collaborations with published authors and faculty have opened up wonderful opportunities for mentorship, publication, workshops, and discussion for competitors (particularly for MS, RFM, and ECP members) within Southern California and beyond it.

Live Your Best Life Program    

The Live Your Best Life (LYBL) Program utilized sessions and created a platform to promote leadership development, communication skills, professionalism, mentorship (including peer mentorship), networking opportunities, and promotion of well-being for nearly 60 invited Resident/Fellow and Early Career Physician members from across 23 Chapters. Educational content and mentorship were provided through nine separate sessions by a group of expert physician coaches, Well-being Champions, national, and local ACP leaders. This program focused on building skill sets, tools, and resources to help RFM and ECP members navigate transitions and significant decisions within their professional and personal lives. In addition, we were able to build a safe and supportive space to foster belonging, connection, and a sense of community among all participants through virtual and in-person meetings. 100% respondents to our survey would recommend The Live Your Best Life program to a colleague and 100% agreed or strongly agreed that it provided an opportunity to reflect on professional development and improved their understanding of how to use personal strengths and values to design a fulfilling career. Future plans include continuing development of the program and expansion of the LYBL community to include those at different career stages and intentional inclusion of additional membership groups.

In order to achieve the Gold Level of the Chapter Excellence Award, chapters must meet nineteen Bronze criteria, seventeen Silver criteria and multiple Gold level activities. Criteria include such activities as having a legislative action plan or agenda, holding a volunteerism/community service activity, holding multiple stand-alone meetings, having revenue sources outside of dues and meeting registration fees, implementing a strategic plan, implementing a formal recruitment and retention plan and measuring outcomes, conducting various activities for Medical Students, Residents and Early Career Physicians.

California Southern III Region Receives the Mary Bieter Evergreen All Stars Award

(May 2023) The Mary Bieter Evergreen All-Star Awards recognized exceptional and sustained chapter-initiated programs that supported and adapted to the Internal Medicine landscape in the United States and around the world. ACP Members were asked to review and select All-Star nominations they believed were worth of recognition. The California Southern III Region received the Mary Bieter Evergreen All-Star Award for their initiative, The DEI Shift Podcast, Changing the Way We Think, Talk and Practice Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The DEI Shift podcast was created to change the practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion within medicine. It is intentionally led and produced by an extremely diverse team from pre-medical students to attending physicians from various racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, geographic, and specialty backgrounds. Monthly team meetings facilitate educational and professional development opportunities as well as sense of belonging and inclusion. 

Over four seasons, a global audience has downloaded over 18,250 podcast episodes across 6 continents, in 81 countries and nearly 2000 cities. A wide range of topics and guests have been featured in enduring learning materials increasing awareness, advocacy, cultural humility, and empathy. This innovative educational platform has led to multi-Chapter, cross-specialty, and interdisciplinary collaborations as well as increased member engagement, mentorship, connections, and leadership development. It has successfully promoted the goals, core values, and DEI-related strategic priorities of the American College of Physicians and the ACP Southern California Region III Chapter.

California Southern III Region Receives the 2023 John Tooker Evergreen Award

(May 2023) The John Tooker Evergreen Awards Program provides recognition and visibility to chapters that have successfully implemented programs to increase membership, improve communication, encourage member involvement, enhance diversity, foster careers in internal medicine or improve chapter management. The California Southern III Region received the 2023 John Tooker Evergreen Award for their initiative, Wellness Wave.

Wellness Wave

It empowered the students to connect with mentors, experts, and their colleagues locally and nationally and allowed the creation of a platform for them to share the fruits of their labor and hard work.

The Southern California Region III's Wellness Wave was a "for us, by us" student-driven initiative led by the Council of Medical Students to empower medical students to connect with mentors, experts, and their colleagues locally and nationally to develop 38 student-led interview videos and a separate Wellness Wave website. It was created to engage medical students/residents to decrease feelings of isolation, burn out, anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism. Local and national faculty, leaders, and mentors were interviewed on their journeys in medicine, asked about career advice, and best practices on creating and maintaining wellness. The Chapter collaborated with three additional ACP chapter to accomplish the Wellness Wave strategy.
