Janaki Deepak, MBBS, FACP, ACP Governor
My Dear Friends & Colleagues,
It has been an exciting few weeks for Maryland ACP! Even in the short time since I stepped into the Governor role, the energy across our Chapter has been incredible. We've been busy building on existing programs and thinking about new ways to engage and support our members.
In addition, our Wellness Story Swaps have continued over the past few months, creating space for reflection, connection, and shared experience. These conversations have been meaningful and well attended.
As we look ahead, my goal is to continue expanding opportunities across the state and across career stages from students to senior physicians.
I wanted to share a few highlights, with much more to come in the months ahead.
Warmly,
Janaki Deepak, MD
Governor, Maryland ACP
Internal Medicine Meeting 2026
At IM 2026, we celebrated both continuity and new beginnings. While I have stepped into the Governor role, we are thrilled that Dr. Colleen Christmas is now serving as Chair of the Board of Governors for 2026–2027 an exciting and well-deserved next chapter for her.
Maryland had a strong presence at the meeting, with more than 10 new Fellows at Convocation and national recognition for several of our colleagues, including Dr. Steve Kravet as a new Master. Our Doctors Dilemma team (Drs. Bennett, Tatro, and Caplan) advanced to the semifinals, and we had excellent representation among speakers and programming, including events designed especially for our IMG members. The joint reception with our colleagues from DC and Virginia was a wonderful evening. Be sure to take a look at the photos if you haven't already.

Chapter Leadership Retreat

Our Chapter Retreat on April 25 brought together Council members and invited participants for a thoughtful and productive day at Oregon Ridge Park. With support from a national ACP award, we reviewed member survey feedback, discussed ways to strengthen our committee structure, and began mapping out a path toward continuing Gold Status. There was a lot of enthusiasm and many great ideas, and we are now working through that input. We look forward to sharing more with you later this summer.

The Mulholland Mohler Residents Meeting
The Mulholland Mohler Residents Meeting on May 7 was, once again, a standout event. With over 220 presentations and more than 50 judges, it continues to be one of the largest meetings of its kind in the country. Dr. Joshua Hartzell delivered a memorable keynote on leadership, and we were especially pleased to honor Dr. Surendra Marur as this year's Conley Award winner. His long-standing contributions to our Chapter are truly exceptional.

ACP Leadership Day
At Leadership Day (May 13–14), our Maryland ACP delegation joined colleagues from across the country on Capitol Hill to advocate for issues that directly impact our patients and our profession. Our group met with several congressional offices and spoke to key priorities, including physician reimbursement, vaccine access, and easing the financial burden on residents. We are grateful to everyone who represented Maryland so thoughtfully and we hope to have even more participation next year.

Get Engaged
There are also many ways to stay involved through our committees, including Diversity, Volunteerism, Early Career Physicians, IMGs, Women in Medicine, Health & Public Policy, Wellness, and WISE Advisors. We want to make sure there is something for everyone, wherever you are in your journey.
And one small ask: if you have a colleague who is not yet an ACP member, please reach out and invite them, send them this note, bring them to an event, or simply start the conversation. Our Chapter grows stronger when we bring new voices into the community.
We truly can't do this work without your engagement and support.
If you're interested in getting involved or joining a committee, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out to me at jadeepak@som.umaryland.edu or to Maryellen at mew4work@aol.com
