Message from the Governor
Greetings, Indiana ACP Colleagues and Friends:
And Greetings from Chicago! We just completed our first in-person Board of Governors meeting in over 2 years, and it was truly a delightful and memorable experience. The ACP Internal Medicine Meeting 2022 is wrapping up this afternoon and was likewise the first in-person major medical meeting experience for many of us in 3 years. The topics, speakers, and content were all excellent and highly relevant to our professional practices. A personal highlight of the Chicago meeting was the Convocation Ceremony honoring new ACP Fellows from throughout the United States and the world. I was proud to lead our group of 4 Indiana ACP Fellow inductees in the formal procession: Dr. Rhonda Eubanks from Evansville; Drs. Rajesh Kumar and Adam Smalley from Indianapolis; and Dr. Nyi T Naing from Fort Wayne. Based on the tremendous success of the Chicago ACP meeting, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at ACP's Internal Medicine Meeting 2023 in sunny San Diego.
After witnessing the excitement and engagement of meeting participants in Chicago, I have high hopes for our upcoming hybrid Indiana Chapter Scientific Meeting slated for October 28th, which will offer in-person and virtual attendance options. Our Program Committee has prepared a highly-relevant curriculum and a wonderful slate of talented speakers. We are also excited to once again host our Poster Session and Doctor's Dilemma competitions for our medical student, resident, and early career members on Thursday, October 27th. Please save the dates on your calendar and look for additional information coming soon for reservation details. Our meetings will once again be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Carmel. Please plan to attend our first in-person meeting since the Fall of 2019!
While in Chicago, I had the opportunity to see posters from several of our Indiana Chapter Resident representatives, including those from IU Southwest, IU Ball, and Ascension St. Vincent. Dr. Brad Allen and I were also able to attend the semi-final round of the National ACP Doctor's Dilemma competition, where our IU Indianapolis Campus residents performed admirably but came up just short of qualifying for the final round. We have several pictures of the events included at the end of this newsletter. I also want to give a heartfelt thanks to Colleen Keeku, our Chapter Executive Director, who arranged a delicious, fun, and relaxing Indiana Chapter reception for all of us to enjoy during our stay in Chicago. Please see below some of the many photos taken during that festive evening.
Leadership Day on Capitol Hill was held on May 17th and 18th and we salute Drs. Brad Allen and Katherine Palmisano for representing our Indiana Chapter Council and statewide membership to our Indiana Senate and House lawmakers regarding ACP's top legislative priorities relevant to all Internists. Many thanks to both for participating in this important opportunity to speak directly with our Indiana legislators in Washington, D.C.
Once again, let me remind all of you to visit ACP's vast online resources for the latest information on managing COVID19 in the inpatient and outpatient settings , vaccination updates , tips on maintaining our personal and professional well-being , and a host of relevant practice management and patient care tools. Also, please check out ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE Clinical Cases , which is a unique online journal that is dedicated to sharing important educational case reports. It is published in conjunction with the American Heart Association Journals, and it is a wonderful resource and opportunity for our own members to share interesting and informative cases with internists everywhere.
Lastly, let me again thank each of you for your ongoing dedication to your patients and the profession, and for the voluntary services many of you provide to your local communities. It is a privilege and honor to represent such a dynamic, growing, and diverse chapter! As warmer weather (finally!) approaches, I hope you spend some time away from work with family and friends and enjoy the fun of an Indiana Summer!
P.S. While COVID19 has certainly not gone away, this is the first newsletter I have prepared in two years that did not lead with grim news and statistics about the pandemic. We still have work to do to get more Hoosiers fully vaccinated and boosted; but for now, it appears that the pandemic is receding, with hospitalizations and deaths significantly decreased. While vigilance is still very much needed, it is wonderful to experience life with others—in person—again. Bravo!

Do you know an Indiana ACP member deserving of recognition? The ACP Indiana Awards Committee would like your help identifying members for the following awards in 2022:
ACP IN Laureate Award
Honors those Fellows and Masters of the American College of Physicians who have demonstrated by their example and conducted an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research, and in service to their community, their Chapter, and the American College of Physicians.
ACP IN Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine Award
Honors an outstanding woman physician IN ACP Member with a distinguished career in areas of exceptional patient care, medical education and/or research.
Outstanding Early Career Physician Award
Honors an IN ACP Early Career Physician (16 years within graduation of medical school) who demonstrates leadership and excellence in the field of internal medicine.
Teaching and Mentorship Award
Honors an IN ACP member in good standing who exemplifies commitment to and involvement in the mentoring of young faculty/fellows/residents/students while enhancing their career development through advising, counseling, and serving as a professional role model.
Volunteerism and Community Service Award
Honors an IN ACP member who demonstrates a significant and sustained commitment to the service of others at a local, state, national, or international level. This award is bestowed upon an ACP Medical Student Member, Resident, Member, Fellow, or Master who has initiated or has been involved in volunteer programs or has provided volunteer service post-training. The service must have been performed on a completely voluntary basis and not for the completion of training or position requirements. Volunteer work must have been done as a physician or medical trainee and be medically related.
Lifetime Achievement Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an IN member who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to internal medicine. The award is a mark of honor and recognition for achievement of a senior physician who has been a faithful member of the chapter and who has made major contributions to medicine in internal medicine in the State of Indiana.
To nominate please send a short nomination letter for presentation to the IN Awards Committee. Please send nominations to Colleen Keeku by July 18th, 2022. Awards will be announced at the Chapter Meeting in October.
ACP Leadership Academy
ACP and the American Association for Physician Leadership jointly offer an 18-month comprehensive Certificate in Physician Leadership program as part of the ACP Leadership Academy. The certificate program offers tracks in either Hospital Medicine or Primary Care. Exclusive to ACP members, this flexible program includes formal training through 49.5 hours of online coursework, virtual group discussions, and a capstone project that demonstrates successful mastery of leadership concepts.
Apply online by June 1, 2022, to enroll in the cohort that begins July 2022.
