Demonstrate leadership skills and develop your interest in internal medicine by starting an Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) on your medical school campus. Learn More.

What is an Internal Medicine Interest Group?

An Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) is an organized group of medical students who meet regularly to explore their interest in internal medicine. These groups have a faculty advisor and student leaders who arrange programming that exposes students to different people and topics within the field of internal medicine.

What is the Internal Medicine Interest Group Sponsorship Program?

  • The Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) Sponsorship Program* provides funding, resources, and learning opportunities to IMIGs to support their interest in internal medicine.
  • *If you are a student at a non-U.S. medical school, please see the International IMIG Sponsorship Program.

Sponsorship Overview

Each IMIG receives an initial $200* in funding after your application is approved. The larger your IMIG, the higher your potential sponsorship! Your IMIG can earn additional sponsorship funding if 30% or more of your medical school's student body** join ACP as free Medical Student Members by January 31.

  • Groups that reach the 30% participation goal will receive $2 per ACP Medical Student Member and groups that do not reach the 30% participation goal will receive $1 per ACP Medical Student Member—up to $1,000 per school* per academic year.
  • IMIG student leaders can track their recruitment progress through their IMIG Dashboard.
  • The IMIG End-of-Year Survey allows you to share your feedback about the program and highlight the great work your IMIG is doing. Please note that completion of the IMIG End-of-Year Survey is required in order to receive your secondary sponsorship payment.

* If your school has multiple campuses, each campus will receive a $150 initial sponsorship payment. The maximum amount any school (not location) can receive is $1,000.

** ACP uses enrollment data obtained from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't find my medical school in the drop-down menu on the IMIG Application form.

The IMIG Sponsorship Program is open to all U.S. Medical Schools recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) or the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).

If your U.S.-based medical school has been omitted from the drop-down menu in error, please contact us at imig@acponline.org. If your medical school is outside the U.S., please see the International Internal Medicine Interest Group Sponsorship Program page.

How should students at my school sign up for FREE ACP Student Membership?

We strongly recommend that medical students apply for ACP Student Membership online. This allows us to reduce paper waste, and enables us to process membership applications more quickly and accurately. If you do choose to use paper membership applications, please send completed applications to:

Member Credentialing
American College of Physicians
190 N Independence Mall West
Philadelphia, PA 19106-9855

Please note that paper applications require 3-4 weeks processing time once they arrive at ACP headquarters, and paper applications are not included in your school's 30% participation calculation.

How does my IMIG get credit for members who join from my school? How does ACP know which students from my school are ACP members?

The application for Medical Student Membership requires students to provide the name of their medical school. ACP tracks all ACP Medical Student Members from each school and sends clubs monthly updates on their progress toward achieving the 30% recruitment goal.

Where does my school's total enrollment data come from?

ACP uses enrollment data obtained from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).
