Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers

Internal Medicine/Psychiatry

Residency programs that combine basic internal medicine training with other disciplines almost always allow completion of training and eligibility for board certification in both areas in a time frame shorter than would be required if training were to be pursued in both fields independently.

See all the career pathways open to internal medicine doctors and explore a “day-in-the-life” of an IM specialist/subspecialist at the bottom of our “Medical Student Career Path page.

In the Clinic

Delirium is an acute confusional state that is common and costly and is associated with significant functional decline and distress. It is the manifestation of acute encephalopathy and is variably called acute brain failure, acute brain dysfunction, or altered mental status.
