Governor's Message
Happy Summer,
As we transition to our summer activities, I would like to update you on the ACP chapter news.
May 2-4 we held the combined ACP/AKOMA chapter meeting. Informative national speakers educated us on vaccines, kidney disease, CRISPR and genetic technology in medicine, our required opiate education and point of care ultrasound workshop. We even had a little fun with Doctor's Dilemma - teams Tom Wood's Girls Night Out barely losing to Porcupines.
Quite a success!!!

Congratulations to our Distinguished Teacher/Mentor awardee John Bramante, MD!

Congrats to Sarah Doaty our latest Fellow to walk in Convocation in Philidelphia at the national meeting. For those new fellows eligible to walk - next year the meeting will be held in near by Los Angeles and we would love to have a larger class!

Leadership Day 2019
Leadership Day was May 15th in DC - thanks to Molly Southworth, and our two students, Rachel Caricaburu and Don Herring, for representing our Alaska Chapter with me! We were able to meet with all our legislators - Lisa Murkowski, Dan Sullivan and Don Young - all were interested in our health care priorities and we hope to continue the conversation at home!
Prior to attending Leadership Day, I had no idea how I would be able to influence the laws and policies that affect the big issues we face, like universal health coverage, drug pricing and availability, and access to primary care clinicians. The format of the conference helped to familiarize me with the proposed bills that address these issues, taught me how to talk about those issues with our representatives through role-play, then gave me the opportunity to talk directly to Alaskan representatives.
It was inspiring to work alongside medical students, Internists and lobbyists all working for the same end goal- the wellbeing of our patients. Now that I know who to talk to and how, I plan to continue to speak out, letting our representatives know how the health policies they are voting on affect us, our patients and our communities.
