Governor's Newsletter
It's been a great start up year. Looking back to 2018, our ACP chapter has achieved many successes. We had a smooth transition of governance, delineated a strategic plan, met for continuing medical education activities, and received the 2018 chapter excellence award. Our membership has grown, and we have a new master: Dr. Germán Malaret. We've had activities specially tailored for the medical students and internal medicine residents. The posters, research and oral competition was a success. The team from the VA Internal Medicine Hospital won the Doctor's Dilemma® competition and will represent us in Philadelphia next year. My thanks to all of you; no doubt all of the accomplishments have been possible due to your support and encouragement. Let's keep it on. Best wishes to all, that you all be blessed with health and fulfillment of your dreams.
Myriam Z. Allende, MD, FACP
Chapter Excellence Award

I am pleased to announce that our chapter is in receipt of the 2018 Chapter Excellence Award! The award recognizes chapters which successfully meet the standards for managing a chapter. In order to achieve the Chapter Excellence Award, all basic criteria and ten optional criteria were met. Criteria included such activities as formulating an effective Governor's Council and committees, communicating frequently with membership, providing educational opportunities, recruiting and advancing members and celebrating membership through local awards.
I would like to extend a special thanks to past Governor, Dr. José Lozada-Costas, our coordinator Rina Vega, and all chapter members who assisted me in all of these endeavors! For their hard work and dedication, we received this award.
Internal Medicine Grand Rounds Program
On November 15, 2018 the ACP Puerto Rico Chapter celebrated the first or our projected Grand Round Series. This event took place in Ponce, at the Ponce Plaza Hotel, where the chapter's Governor, endocrinologist, Dr. Myriam Z. Allende, was the keynote speaker, A case was presented followed by an “Update in Management of Diabetes Mellitus.” The focus of this event was to bring together Internal Medicine residents to discuss the most recent and relevant changes in anti-hyperglycemic therapies. We were pleased to have the participation of over 30 Internal Medicine residents representing the two local Internal Medicine residency programs, and numerous faculty members.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Juan Carlos Conde, Dr. Pedro Benítez, and all the Internal Medicine residents of Damas Hospital and San Lucas Hospital for their interest and participation in this successful event. It was a great opportunity to meet and greet colleagues from the south/west part of the Island who are members of our Chapter, and also to meet young physicians interested in our Chapter activities. We look forward to continue with this initiative across the island during 2019.
“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the ACP and the Residents of Damas Hospital and San Lucas Hospital for their availability and participation in this successful event. We are looking forward to continued partnership to discuss important medical issues in our community! “
Juan Conde San Miguel, MD
