(MACP®)
Mastership is an award, not a progression. Because of the significance of this recognition, candidates may not self-nominate.
The first MACP in the College was presented in 1923 to Dr. James M. Anders, who served the College as President for two terms. He was recognized for extraordinary service to the College and for being one of the most outstanding internists and medical teachers of his day.
ACP Bylaws state that MACPs shall be Fellows who have been selected because of “integrity, positions of honor, impact in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” MACPs must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating impact in practice, leadership, or in medical research. Evidence of their achievements can come from many types of endeavors, such as renown within their field and/or ACP chapter, research, education, health care initiatives, volunteerism, administrative positions, care of patients, and service to their community.
ACP involvement is highly valued; Mastership is rarely awarded in absence of ACP involvement. ACP involvement may include, for example, service to the College in an official capacity, participation in chapter activities, participation in College committees, and involvement in the development of College educational programs.
The MACP Committee is especially interested in letters that use personal observations and experiences to illuminate the nominee's impact on ACP and internal medicine.
Please note: One letter of nomination plus three supporting letters are required, for a total of four letters plus the nominee’s CV.
Nominating and supporting letters should address:
- What are the most significant contributions of this nominee towards the art, science, and practice of medicine?
- How has the nominee attained recognition in the area of medical practice, health care initiatives, education, research, volunteerism, and/or administrative positions?
- How has the nominee been involved with the American College of Physicians? What contributions (past or present) to ACP has the nominee made?
- In what way has the nominee furthered the Mission and Goals of ACP (past, present, or future plans)?
- How does this nominee exhibit integrity?
