Lt Col Angelique N. Collamer, MC, USAF, FACP, ACP Governor

From the Governor

The summer has flown by and it is suddenly fall, a time of settling into new routines both at work and at home. I hope you are all finding calm moments following the busy summer PCS and vacation season. Time passes quickly in the clinic and hospital wards, and it is easy to lose connections with amazing colleagues and friends. I am looking forward to reconnecting with many of you during our upcoming fall meeting and hope you will be able to attend.

It was great to see many from our chapter at the National ACP Meeting in San Diego and congratulations to all who presented at the meeting! Scholarly activity remains strong among our members, and I was yet again impressed at the quality of all our resident and poster submissions this year! It was wonderful to see so many of our members delivering lectures on the national stage including Dr. Theodore Freeman, Dr. Matthew Carroll, Dr. Derek Smith, and Dr. Heather Yun.

Our 2023 Tri-Service Planning Committee is wrapping up final meeting details for the upcoming November meeting which will bring the Tri-Service scientific sessions back to the National Capital Region for the first time since 2012. It's not too late to register for the 8 to 10 November meeting and early bird rates are available through 14 October. Please feel free to reach out to our Air Force meeting planner, Dr. John Hunninghake, or myself with questions.

In addition to our Tri-Service meeting, we have been busy planning the joint Ohio State / Air Force chapter scientific meeting which will take place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on 19 and 20 October 2023. Many thanks to Lt Col Kathryn Burtson who is not only taking the Air Force lead on the planning committee but delivering several scientific sessions at the meeting. If you are local to Ohio or just looking for another great CME learning opportunity with Air Force colleagues, please consider attending the meeting!

I am so thankful for the privilege of serving as Governor of our chapter. It's hard to believe that it is already time for the election of your next Governor who will take over chapter leadership in April 2025. Many thanks to our Chapter Nominations committee for finding two very qualified candidates to represent our chapter—see details below!

If there is anything I can do to support you, please do not hesitate to reach out. I look forward to hearing from you and Aim High!

Sincerely,

Angie

Highlights from the National Meeting: IM 2023

Many of us participated in the National ACP meeting this April. Below are just some of the outstanding accomplishments of our members.

We honored our recent Laurette award winners, Masters of the ACP, and new Fellows at Convocation. It was a significant moment honoring many from all our military chapters. Congratulations to all who were recognized!

Some of our Tri-Service members who were inducted as Masters of the ACP: Dr. Matthew Carroll, Dr. Kevin Chung, Dr. Paul Hemmer, and Dr. James Quinn. It is an honor to be recognized for Mastership in the ACP, a distinction that recognized an individual's lifetime work.

Additionally, Dr. Ryan Collier was inducted as a new fellow of the ACP. For new FACP members, please take the opportunity to participate in convocation if you are able during the three years following election! The ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments and connect with colleagues.

Governor Election

I can hardly believe it, but it's time to vote for our next Chapter Governor! The Governor serves as the official representative of the College for the chapter, providing a link between members at the local level and leadership at the national level.

This year we have two superb candidates running for Governor-elect, Dr. Brian Neubauer and Dr. John Hunninghake. I want to acknowledge and thank them both for their enthusiastic and dedicated work on behalf of our Chapter. Learn more about their background and experience by reviewing their biographies and candidate statements on our Chapter's Website.

The election will take place between September 29 and November 3. Members can vote online. The ballot includes your ACP Member Number and unique Election Passcode that is required to cast a vote.

Please note the following to ensure a smooth voting process:

  • Eligible voters are MACPs, FACPs, Members, and Resident/Fellow Members with an election date of 9/1/2021 or earlier.
  • ACP partners with Survey & Ballot Systems (SBS) to conduct the election.
  • Add noreply@directvote.net as an approved sender so your ballot arrives safely in your inbox.
  • The subject of the ballot email will be “ACP 2023 Governor-elect Election Voting Information.”

Our chapter is full of talented individuals and as your Governor I will do my best to recognize as many of you as possible.

2023 Chapter Excellence Awards

Each year every ACP Chapter is evaluated for their activities and how they support their members. Chapters can be awarded a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Excellence Award based on their ongoing activities and new initiatives. Our chapter again earned the Silver Excellence Award. Only 11 chapters received the Silver Award. Criteria include such activities as undertaking efforts to increase visibility of the ACP, holding competitions for members, providing chapter financial reports to members, having Medical Student and Resident/Fellow members on the Governor's Advisory council, retaining members, giving awards to chapter members. I would like to extend a special thanks to those chapter members who assisted us in all these endeavors!

Interested in Fellowship (FACP®)?

Please check out the ACP webpage for more information about fellowship: https://www.acponline.org/node/290773. Fellowship in the College is a widely recognized honor. Being an FACP® is a distinction earned from colleagues who recognize your accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine. The most important considerations for ACP Fellowship are excellence and contributions made to both medicine and to the broader community in which the internist lives and practices.

The basic requirements to apply for fellowship are board certification, licensure, clinical practice for 3 years out of residency, and being a dues paying member for the previous 3 years. In addition, additional requirements include other professional activities – teaching, community service, leadership, scholarship, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions about how to achieve fellowship after reviewing the link above.
