W. James Stackhouse, MD, spent his entire career in private practice in Goldsboro, NC, where he focused on internal medicine and geriatrics. He is known for his relentless advocacy on behalf of the practicing physician, evident during his many years' service to ACP and his local medical societies. He was a member of the College's Board of Regents from 1998 to 2001, serving as a Transitional Regent from the American Society of Internal Medicine leadership, and then from 2002 through 2005. As a Regent, he served on the Membership Committee, the Marketing and Communications Committee, the PIER Steering Committee, and the Finance Committee. He was Chair of the Member Insurance Subcommittee and served as Treasurer of ACP from 2007 to 2010. He has also served as a member of the COLA Board.
Locally, Dr. Stackhouse has been extremely involved with the North Carolina Medical Society and the Wayne County Medical Society. In addition, he served as the Governor's appointee to the North Carolina Legislative Task Force on Stroke and Heart Attack Prevention for 17 years. He received the North Carolina ACP Chapter Laureate Award in 2000 and Mastership in 2006.
Established by the Board of Regents on April 27, 1947, The Alfred Stengel Memorial Award is bestowed for outstanding service to the American College of Physicians. The award honors Dr. Stengel, a Regent and President of the College for two terms.
