Message from the Governor
Greetings to all New Mexico ACP members, and thank you for electing me to the office of Governor of the New Mexico Chapter.
As I commence my four-year term, ACP nationally is launching a major new initiative to "revitalize internal medicine." This effort spearheaded by the Board of Regents and the Board of Governors is in response to widespread concern about the health of our discipline. It promises to be an exciting time as this national initiative moves forward, and I am committed to informing and involving our New Mexico ACP membership in the revitalization process. In searching for a common theme that might be central to future deliberations regarding the revitalization of our discipline, I would suggest that a renewed commitment to professionalism be the guiding principle.
The current goals of the New Mexico Chapter include member recruitment (generalists and sub specialists), advocacy for an improved practice environment for all internists, patient advocacy for choice and access to care, and involvement in State and Federal policy issues as they impact the health of the public. We are also enhancing the participation of medical students and resident trainees in Chapter activities through the Internal Medicine interest group and Associates Committee of the Council. I can assure the Membership that your council is energetic and focused on addressing all of these issues.
Finally, communication with the membership is a key responsibility of the Governor and Council. This is a particular challenge in our state because one third of our members reside in small communities at considerable distance from Albuquerque. I am committed to better connecting our central organization with internists outside of Albuquerque. Enhancing electronic communication and establishing a key contact program throughout the state are two initiatives to pursue in this regard.
Please join me in supporting the efforts of the ACP to revitalize the profession of Internal Medicine.
