Meet Our Governor-elect Designee
British Columbia Chapter
Congratulations to the British Columbia Chapter Governor-Elect Designee, Dawn E. Dewitt, MD, FACP. Our new Governor-elect Designee will do a year of training as a Governor-elect and then will start her four-year term as Governor in the Spring of 2015. As Governor, Dr. Dewitt will serve as the official representative of the College for the British Columbia Chapter, providing a link between members at the local level and leadership at the national level. In the meantime, Dr. Dewitt will be working closely with Dr. Meneilly (the current Governor) and College staff to learn about the College and her duties as Governor. To learn more about Dr. Dewitt, feel free to read her bio below.

CHAPTER INVOLVEMENT AND LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES: Having recently relocated to Vancouver from Australia, Dr. DeWitt is a new member of the ACP BC Chapter. The Chapter is excited to work with Dr. DeWitt, hopefully as the Chapter’s next Governor-elect, as she continues to demonstrate and model the core values of the ACP.
HOSPITAL/COMMUNITY SERVICE: Dr. DeWitt relocated from Australia to Canada in 2012. Her first year in Vancouver was consumed with many activities related to international relocation and taking on her dual UBC roles of Associate Dean Vancouver-Fraser at a time when the increased class size is reaching a peak, requiring additional clinical planning and active expansion into Fraser HA; and the role of Associate Dean Undergraduate Medical Education at a time when Curriculum Renewal in the UBC Faculty of Medicine is in full gear. These many commitments have precluded clinical work, which she sorely misses. She has privileges at both Vancouver Coastal Health and Fraser Health. She is also recertifying in Internal Medicine with the ABIM (requiring study, projects, etc.). In 2013 she is working on the goals of finding time to work clinically to maintain her skills and credentials, to become involved in at least one national Canadian project in medical education (FMEC transitions) and to begin teaching and mentoring students and faculty (particularly women but also clinical educators).
Prior to moving to Canada in 2012, Dr. DeWitt was a Consulting Physician from 2003-2011 at Goulburn Valley Health, Rumbalara Aboriginal Medical Centre, and Shepparton Private Hospital in Australia.
OTHER APPOINTMENTS: Dr. DeWitt has served in national roles for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Society of General Internal Medicine.
AREAS OF PROFESSIONAL INTEREST AND EXPERTISE: Dr. DeWitt is internationally renowned for her expertise in education of medical students in ambulatory and rural settings. She is also an outstanding teacher and has won several awards for teaching excellence including election to AOA. Her research interests include addressing workforce shortages, career choice, diabetes and addressing rural health disparities (particularly Indigenous health).
I still remember my excitement and sense of belonging when I first was recruited to ACP, in 1993. Senior ACP physicians supported my efforts to start a regional chapter for residents. As a Fellow of ACP, I have advocated passionately for Rural Physicians and Community-based Teaching. As I study for recertification (via ACP precourse and MKSAP), I hope to involve interested members in the development of ACP academic and practice resources.
As Governor, I would like to bring the benefits and collegiality that I have enjoyed to my peers, residents and medical students in the BC Chapter. As Governor, I will support efforts to create opportunities for connecting in BC and beyond. Finally, having practiced in rural hospitals and tertiary metropolitan centres, and in Canada, the US, and Australia, I hope this broad perspective might facilitate in representing your views regarding ACP advocacy and policy development.
