In collaboration with the AMA Foundation and AMA Alliance, the AMA launched WorldScopes more than a year ago with the goal of collecting and distributing 100,000 stethoscopes to physicians and others around the world who lack access to this most basic medical instrument. Over the last year, WorldScopes has distributed thousands of stethoscopes to hospitals, medical schools, and clinics. Stethoscopes have been delivered to medical students in Guatemala, nurses in Uganda, and physicians in Afghanistan. However, the goal of collecting 100,000 scopes is far from being achieved.
As a tangible way to promote the spirit of ethics and professionalism in medicine, the AMA is organizing a nationwide "virtual" stethoscope collection effort through its WorldScopes program. The AMA is calling on all state and specialty societies to make their members aware of this worthy humanitarian initiative and to encourage them to make a tax-deductible financial contribution or online stethoscope donation via www.worldscopes.org.
The most productive way for physicians and others who would like to donate a new stethoscope is through our website, www.worldscopes.org. AMA has partnered with Henry Schein, a leading medical supply distributer, who has organized an efficient collection and distribution effort on AMA's behalf. Potential donors can click on the link on the right side of the screen and directly place an order. Additionally, donors who would like to directly donate money can do so online via the AMA Foundation .
