ACP Honors New Jersey Chapter with an Evergreen Award
At the 2010 Internal Medicine Meeting, ACP presented ten Evergreen Awards and two Special Recognition Awards to honor Chapters that created new programs that strengthened the chapter and increased member communication and involvement.
The New Jersey Chapter received the 2010 Evergreen Award for their A General and Targeted Needs Assessment for the NJ Chapter Chief Resident Leadership Program: Success Begins with Planning. Here is a brief description of the chapter's effort.
A general and targeted needs analysis for the NJ Chapter ACP Chief Resident Leadership Program was performed to determine baseline leadership perceptions and learning needs of NJ Internal Medicine chief residents, guide the curricular development of the NJ Chapter ACP Chief Resident Leadership Program and build support for the program among all Internal Medicine chief residents and program directors in NJ. The needs analysis was performed in July 2009 using mixed methods through a survey instrument containing questions about demographics, structured questions, and open ended questions. The quantitative component of the survey contained questions on residents' perceived importance of various leadership knowledge and skills areas. Residents were asked whether each topic was formally taught in their residency program and whether the resident was interested in learning more about each topic. The qualitative component contained open ended questions on residents' perceptions of leadership and their future roles as health care leaders. Based on the results of the survey, the Leadership Program now contains a 5-hour workshop with leadership knowledge and skills instruction, a longitudinal component with engagement of Chief Residents through social media and leadership activities, and a follow-up dinner meeting.
