July 7, 2010

J. Fred Ralston, Jr., MD, FACP
President, American College of Physicians
Internist, Fayetteville, Tenn.

Last month, the American College of Physicians (ACP) joined more than 700 stakeholders on the front lines of health care delivery – including business, consumers, insurers, and clinicians – to support Dr. Berwick’s nomination. With his appointment today, we underscore our feelings:

ACP supports President Obama’s appointment of Donald Berwick, MD, as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Dr. Berwick’s career and work at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement illustrates the drive to provide patient-centered care, patient safety, quality improvement, and care coordination in health care. He is well respected in the health-care community and known for his desire to bring constructive change to health care delivery. We share these objectives and believe Dr. Berwick will be an able Administrator and partner for change.

The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 130,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists, and medical students. Internists specialize in the prevention, detection, and treatment of illness in adults. Follow ACP on Twitter and Facebook.
