American College of Physicians Appoints Patrick C. Alguire, MD, FACP, Senior Vice President for Medical Education

PHILADELPHIA, February 28, 2011 -- The American College of Physicians (ACP) has appointed Patrick C. Alguire, MD, FACP, to the position of senior vice president for medical education. The appointment was made after a recommendation from a national search committee.

ACP is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. ACP members include 130,000 internal medicine physicians (internists), related subspecialists, and medical students. Internists specialize in the prevention, detection, and treatment of illness in adults.

"It has been a pleasure for me to work with Dr. Alguire since I joined ACP in 2004," said Steven Weinberger, MD, FACP, ACP's executive vice president and chief executive officer. "I have consistently been impressed by his ability to develop the highest quality content for ACP, his terrific judgment, and his effective leadership skills."

As senior vice president for medical education, Dr. Alguire is responsible for the development and publication of ACP's medical knowledge products and services, advancing career and faculty development in internal medicine, and the development of ACP's clinical practice guidelines and resources for certification and maintenance of certification.

Dr. Alguire joined ACP in 1998 as director of education and career development. While at ACP, he has edited, authored, or co-authored more than 20 medical education books and resources, including Teaching in Your Office: A Guide to Teaching Medical Students and Residents and MKSAP (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program) 15. Dr. Alguire has authored or co-authored numerous articles in peer-review publications such as the Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and American Journal of Medicine.

An internist, Dr. Alguire is also a clinical professor of medicine at Thomas Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. He earned his medical degree at the College of Human Medicine of Michigan State University in 1975 and completed his internal medicine residency in 1978 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. Alguire has earned a number of teaching awards and served on numerous medical school and national health committees.
