Chapter Volunteerism Group

Chapter Volunteerism Group

Volunteerism is the policy or practice of volunteering ones time or talents for charitable, educational or other worthwhile activities especially in one's community.

The ACP Maryland Chapter has a Volunteerism Group that highlights the volunteer activities of our members. In addition, the group helps members search for volunteer activities to become more involved in their community.

Our goals are to:

  1. Disseminate information on volunteer activities.
  2. Support our members who volunteer.
  3. Encourage volunteerism among our members.
  4. Highlight members who desire to improve the health and well-being of others.

Volunteering exemplifies the calling of medicine. It provides opportunities to gain clinical expertise and problem-solving. It also allows clinicians to support communities in need as well as to improve the lives of patients while connecting with them in a lasting and meaningful way.

Evidenced-based medicine has shown that volunteerism directly affects medical students and residents clinical skills, attitude and knowledge positively. In addition, it has been shown to have an influence on the career choice of primary care specialties in underserved communities.

Please consider volunteering in your community and let us know the types of activities in which you are involved. We plan to feature a MD ACP Volunteer Profile periodically on the Chapter Web site. In order to do this, we need volunteers to contact us as so that we may profile your volunteer activities and organization. Contact Chimene Liburd, MD, MBA, FACP and Adriana Andrade, MD, FACP with your information so that we may highlight your volunteerism.

We encourage our Maryland members to volunteer and to visit ACP's Volunteerism Subcommittee Web site. It has a wealth of information about opportunities and resources and facilitates choosing activities specific to your interests. If you are interested in finding out more about domestic and international opportunities currently available, please go to the Web site and complete the Volunteerism Network Data Form.

Thanks for your support of the Maryland Chapter Volunteerism Group!
