Overview

The work groups of the College and its Board of Regents (BOR) fall into six categories described below.

Executive Committees

Are a subset of and report to one of the boards. A board my delegate to its executive committee certain duties and the authority to act on its behalf in specified situations.

Board Policy Committees

Report to the Board of Regents and are chaired by a Regent; primary output is policy recommendation to the Board of Regents. Chair, Vice-Chair, and members-at-large who are members of the BOR serve one, non renewable, two-year term. Members-at-large who are not members of the BOR serve two-year terms, renewable once. Time served in any position is independent. Total time served cannot exceed six years unless 5 years has lapsed since the last date served in any position at which time another two year term as a committee member may be served, which may be renewed once if not currently a member of the BOR.

Subcommittees of Board Policy Committees

Report to a Board Policy Committee and are chaired by a member of the parent Board Policy Committee; primary output is advice or policy recommendation to the parent Board Policy Committee. Members and chairs serve one-year, renewable up to three times for a total of four years, unless additional time is approved by the Chair, BOR.

Management Advisory Committees

Report to College management and may be chaired by management or an ACP member physician, depending on the committee's focus; primary output is advice to management. Reporting to the Board of Regents is rare, but when necessary is through the CEO or their designee. Members and non-staff Chairs serve one-year terms renewable up to three times for a total of four years, unless extended by the CEO to provide necessary expertise.

Technical Advisory Committees

Report to the Board of Regents; Chair and Members are technical experts. Primary output is policy recommendations to the Board of Regents. As policy is based on technical expertise, the Board of Regents will agree or disagree with the recommendations from a Technical Advisory Committee, but will not edit or revise at the time a recommendation is presented. Members and Chairs serve one-year terms renewable up to three times for a total of four years, unless extended by the Chair, Board of Regents to provide necessary expertise.

Councils

Report to the Board of Regents in an advisory capacity representing an important member segment and are chaired by a member of the segment. Primary output is a proactive suggestion to the Board of Regents from the perspective of the member segment or a response to requested input by the Board of Regents or a committee desiring input from the perspective of the member segment represented by the Council. Terms vary depending on the nature of the Council.

Representatives from the Council of Student Members (CSM), Council of Resident/Fellow Members (CRFM) and Council of Early Career Physicians (CECP) to Board Policy or Technical Advisory Committees (TAC) are appointed at the discretion of the respective Council, may serve one or two years, and are approved by the BOR.
