Governor's Greetings
– Robert L. Allison, MD MACP
February 2020 brings me to the middle of my first year as your Governor. So far it has been an amazing experience and I really appreciate all the help in running the chapter that I get from our Executive Director Kris Rahm, my Executive Committee and our Committee Chairs. We are constantly pulled in many directions to meet our members' needs. We have been working on our financial stability to ensure that we can focus on projects such as Early Career Physician events, volunteerism, advocacy and of course our annual meeting.
In this newsletter you will get to enjoy the following reports from our committee chairs on each of these topics as I tease you with a summary of the events so far this year. And if you are interested in joining a committee please contact Kris or me directly.
Health & Public Policy:
The year has started off with a bang! One of the biggest reveals of the year took place in late January with the ACP National office releasing their new vision of a better US health care system. The manifesto with three supporting documents lays the groundwork for a discussion on national health policy. I encourage each of you to find a copy of this document and give it a read. We also head to Pierre for our State Legislature to advocate for physicians and patients. Kelly Evans-Hullinger spearheads our Gladiators as our new Health and Public Policy Chair. We will be ramping up for ACP Leadership Day in May and look forward to members joining us in DC.
Membership:
Our South Dakota Chapter has only 444 members but reached the highest excellence criteria for a chapter in 2019 - Gold.
Our ACP National organization collectively includes 159,000 members across 85 chapters and regions around the world. I'm proud to be a part of such an amazing organization. We need help to make sure members renew their National dues. The health systems have CME monies available, but members tend to get lost in the renewal details. Help us help you renew! Call us if you have problems or contact ACP national staff online. Jeet Thakkar is the Chair of our Hospitalist Committee and is looking to build a stronger relationship with our hospitalist members. Reach out to him if you are interested in networking.
Awards/Meetings:
I encourage all of you to plan to make the 2020 National ACP Internal Medicine Meeting. This year we travel to Los Angeles and will honor two of our Masters at the Convocation with National honors - Rick Holm, MD MACP on his Edwards Volunteerism Award and Mary Nettleman, MD MACP on her Blackwell Award for Outstanding Contributions to Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine. We also celebrate a new Master in Ashok Kumar, MD MACP. The education and energy is amazing and it should be on your calendar yearly as a must do event.
Also, this year we head to Aberdeen on October 14-16 for our annual meeting. Fatima Kidwai spearheads our local program committee and is building “the best meeting of the year” yet again! Look for a Skills Workshop session to be a highlight of this year's meeting.
Physician Health:
Physician organizations continue to focus on physician health and burnout. The health systems have been measuring the rates of burnout in their employees. Look for a survey in 2020 from our own Wellness Champion, Clarissa Barnes as we will post a ‘Mini Z’ survey to measure our own chapter's burnout rate.
“#IMPROUD to Serve My Community” Volunteer Project

South Dakota needs your help!
SDACP is now collecting financial donations to purchase toiletry items for client care packages for three domestic violence shelters statewide for our “#IMPROUD to Serve My Community” volunteer project. Those shelters include Safe Harbor in Aberdeen, WAVI in Rapid City, and Children's' Inn in Sioux Falls.
These items will be put into care packages by our members at our annual meeting October 14-16, 2020 in Aberdeen, SD, and then delivered to the shelters for their clients. SAVE THE DATE NOW, and don't miss this unique networking opportunity. Suggestions for subsequent projects will be discussed at that time also.

Health & Public Policy Update

Greetings to all my friends in the ACP of South Dakota. I hope 2020 finds you well.
The January 21, 2020, issue of Annals of Internal Medicine included a supplement titled “Better Is Possible: The American College of Physicians' Vision for the U.S. Health Care System,” a 67-page compilation of policy papers based on available evidence of systems in the U.S. and around the world as well as input from ACP members and policy committees. I would encourage you to read it and the supporting documents; you can access the supplement online HERE.
Certainly, anytime health care policy is discussed, politics are inevitably invoked. As stated in this supplement, “We are not surprised that when the ACP advocates policy that will have an impact on patients and physicians, some admonish the organization not to be political… However, patient care is not a partisan issue. The ACP's vision for U.S. health care is ‘ACP green,’ not partisan red or blue” (S1). Further, “The ACP rejects the view that the status quo is acceptable, or that it is too politically difficult to achieve needed change” (S5).
Finally, the authors state, “We hope that those who challenge ACP's recommendations will offer their own thoughtful alternative solutions rather than just opposing ours” (S5). The supplement is thoughtful, thorough, and bold, and I hope can ignite rich discussion about real policy change.
We look forward to returning to Washington, DC, in May for ACP Leadership Day. As in years prior, our chapter will sponsor a medical student representative to join committee members as we learn more about ACP policy, immerse ourselves in advocacy, and meet with our elected officials and their staff on Capitol Hill.

The Best Meeting of the Year!

I must admit that back when Rick Holm, MD MACP, once referred to our Annual Scientific Meeting as “The Best Meeting of the Year”, I didn't have intimate knowledge of exactly what our members' choices were for attending a quality CME/MOC meeting. However, since that time, my subsequent Governors, and their Program Committees, have continued to raise the bar each year, not only in seeking out quality speakers, who specifically address what is being requested on the prior year's evaluations and National ACP's PRACTICE GAPS, but also by providing unique networking opportunities.
That said, here are some highlights from our 2020 annual meeting program October 14-16, 2020 in Aberdeen:

USD Residency Update–

The USD Sanford School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program once again had a 100% ABIM board pass rate for our graduates. This is our 3rd consecutive year of 100% pass rate. The PGY-3s had an excellent fellowship match this year. We have 6 residents going into the following fellowships:
Gastroenterology – University of Minnesota
Critical Care Medicine – Cleveland Clinic
Geriatrics – Cleveland Clinic
Endocrinology – University of Minnesota
Rheumatology – Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Pulmonary/Critical Care – Geisinger Commonwealth.
Our other two residents are planning careers in Hospital Medicine at this time. We have completed interviews for our next class of residents at the end of December and are looking forward to Match Day in March.
2019 Chapter Excellence Award Recipient – SDACP is Golden!
Congratulations to SDACP for achieving the 2019 Gold Chapter Excellence Award. The award guides chapters to reach basic expectations in chapter management and inspires chapters through a tiered reward system to achieve excellence.
The award is defined by three distinct levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
