Our chapter was well represented at Internal Medicine 2012 in New Orleans last month. We had ninety four members from our chapter to attend the meeting. I'm sorry I didn't get to see each one of you, but I did look for you. It is surprising how many times you run into one of your fellow Mississippians at such a large meeting..Next time remember that we usually have a reception with the Louisiana and Alabama chapters on Friday evening.
We had nine members inducted as Fellows at the big Convocation. Our chapter continues to produce Fellows, which shows that we take our profession seriously. I would like to invite all Fellows, new and old to participate in the leadership of the chapter. Just let me or our Governor Elect, Dan Woodliff, know your interests. In particular we need leadership around the state to stir up more activity in the communities in which we practice.

Finally, congratulations to our Associates, who presented posters on original research and unusual patients at the national competition. I was able to see their work directly and was very impressed. Many of the Governors from around the country were judges and many made a point to compliment me on how well our team did. Hats off to Dr. Calvin Thigpen, who has raised the bar for this type of scientific presentation. That's a lot of work over several years to get to this point. Thanks Calvin. And congratulations to Dr. Dominique Pepper, who is a 2012 Associates Research Poster winner. The next time you attend a national ACP meeting be sure to go by the Associate's presentation; you'll see several from Mississippi.

Next year Internal Medicine 2013 will be held in San Francisco. We need another big turnout from Mississippi.
We have a great curriculum laid out for our chapter meeting September 6-8, 2012 at the Grand Hotel at Point Clear, Alabama. Be on the lookout for an important e-mail giving the details. We have been approved for nine hours of CME over a day and half. But, please, take advantage of this great venue. The Grand Hotel has beautiful grounds, two great golf courses, the beach with sailboats, a world class spa, and great food. This setting is perfect for young families, so bring you children.
We are very lucky to have Dr. Steve Weinberger, CEO of the ACP, Dr. Michael Barr, Senior Vice President for Practice Development, Professionalism, and Quality, and Dr. Susan Hingle, Chair Elect of the Board of Governors. That's a lot of ACP firepower. Dr. Barr is a true expert on the electronic health record and the Medical Home. These three physician leaders will be available to discuss any concerns you have in your own practice or events at the national level. Having access to three national leaders of this caliber and at their level is a rare event that you should not miss.
Start making plans to attend this meeting in September. The hotel has given us a nice discount on rooms and on the golf course. It's a great way to reconnect to old friends from around the state and make new ones as well.

We are pleased to announce that our Chapter is the recipient of a 2011 Chapter Excellence Award. The Chapter Excellence Award recognizes those chapters that excel in reaching the standards for managing a chapter, such as communicating to members, instituting Medical Students' and Associates' activities and advancing and recruiting members. 2012 MS/LA meeting to be one of many firsts
The 2012 MS/LA ACP Scientific Meeting, to be held in The Grand Hotel Marriott in Point Clear, Alabama, September 6th-8th, promises to be one of many firsts. With several sessions appearing on the agenda for the first time and several returning from previous meetings, there will be plenty for everyone to apply to their practice and career.
The meeting, themed "Internists First", will kick off on the afternoon of the 6th with a half-day strategic planning session for the Mississippi chapter led by Susan Hingle, Governor-elect of the ACP Board of Governors. Dr. Hingle has capably led her own Southern Illinois chapter, as well as other chapters around the country, through a similar planning process with success. All chapter members are encouraged to attend as we plan our direction for the coming years.
On the morning of the 7th, the Associates Poster Competition returns to the program after a brief hiatus. Associates will present their work for a panel of judges, and awards will be presented at the conclusion of the meeting in the categories of clinical research, basic science research, clinical vignettes, and quality improvement/patient safety. Three CME sessions of the shorter variety that has been used with good results at Internal Medicine the last several years will follow the competition. Speakers include former UMC Department of Medicine Chairman Dr. Rick deShazo; Immediate Past Governor of Louisiana Dr. Fred Lopez; and Dr. Angela Subauste, a recent addition to the UMC endocrinology faculty.
Just prior to and during lunch, there will be another first for our state meeting. Dr. Stephen Geraci, author of the recent Notes for the Academic Clinician, will lead two interactive sessions centered around career development and making the best possible choices when faced with critical career decisions. Dr. William Davis, current Governor of the Louisiana chapter, will be a part of the first of these two sessions.
In the afternoon of the 7th, Dr. Vikas Majithia will speak on biologics in inflammatory disease prior to Dr. Michael Barr's visit from the College to provide an update on practice management by helping us wade through healthcare's alphabet soup. The remainder of the afternoon will feature the popular Associate oral presentations and Doctor's Dilemma (or Jeopardy!) contest before the day concludes with the annual laureate dinner.
Several firsts mark the final day of the meeting, beginning with a breakfast session aimed at guiding all interested attendees through the ACP fellowship application process. A Stump the Professor session, where some of the sharpest minds from both chapters will work through a case previously unknown to them, follows. Dr. Joe Files, honored as a Master in the ACP at IM 2011, will then share some of his wisdom in a "last lecture" format made popular by Randy Pausch's best-selling book. Dr. Steve Weinberger, Executive Vice-President and CEO of the College, will then conclude the CME portion of the meeting with a talk on his recently published work on the judicious use of diagnostic testing before leading an interactive "State of the College" session.
The close of this year's meeting will include the presentation of first place winners in the four categories of the Associates' abstract competition and a random drawing for a free trip to IM 2013 to be held in San Francisco, California, next April (must be present to win).
We hope everyone in the chapter will take advantage of the opportunities that this year's meeting affords, both for education and for relaxation, as the resort itself is good reason to bring the family along and spend an extra day on either side of the meeting. Dominique Pepper, MD wins Award at National ACP Meeting 2012 in New Orleans, LA.
In light of the need to maintain membership in the chapter among young physicians who have recently completed their residency training, several subspecialty fellows at UMC formed the first ACP Subspecialty Fellows Council of the Mississippi Chapter and of the national College in early 2011. The council, composed of one fellow from each of the subspecialty training programs at the university, also intends to serve as a liaison between the subspecialty fellows and the Department of Medicine leadership at UMC, to encourage participation in scientific meetings, and to enhance the camaraderie across fellowship programs at the university.
Since its inception, the council has played a role in the ACP abstract workshops focused on scholarly activity among residents and fellows; and it has assisted with ACP Abstract Day held on the university campus this past October. Moving forward, the council aims to design more avenues for fellow communication, to encourage professionalism among the subspecialty fellows, and to enhance the fellows' participation at local, regional, and national ACP functions, as well as their participation in chapter and College committees. If the Mississippi Subspecialty Fellows Council is successful in accomplishing their purposes over the coming years, the College hopes to use the framework and bylaws as a model for the development of similar councils throughout the country.

The past year has been an exciting and productive one for the UMMC ACP Associate's Council. Our members continue to be leaders in the community as well as the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the newest council members of the intern class elected in the fall are carrying on this tradition of excellence.
Within the residency program, the council has worked to promote educational activity as well as advocacy within the medical community. Our members organized another successful Abstract Day in the fall to highlight the accomplishments of our house staff and students, and through the help of the Mississippi ACP Chapter, two members of the Associate's council traveled to Washington D.C. for the Annual ACP Leadership Day. Each experience has cultivated a spirit of enduring scholarship and activism in all our members.
Within the community, the council has helped to promote early health and assist with those in need. Our annual Ready, Set, Fit day was held at Madison Station Elementary where several of our members taught children the importance of a healthy lifestyle in preventing medical illness. Also, the members continue to be active in the Jackson Free Clinic, a medical student driven clinic aimed at health care for impoverished members of inner city Jackson.
The UMMC ACP Associate's Council will continue to strive for achievement in all areas of Internal Medicine, and we look forward to the 2012-2013 academic year with new opportunities for learning, teaching, and community involvement. Over the past year, there has been renewed passion for scholarly activity in the Department of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). The ACP embarked on a series of workshops, which culminated in a very strong showing at the Annual ACP Competitions, both locally and nationally.
On May 4 and 18, 2011 the ACP Associates Committee and ACP Fellows Council held a 2-day workshop to instruct Internal Medicine residents on the basics of abstract writing. On Day One, short presentations were expertly given by Calvin Thigpen, MD, Eric Reiners, MD, Dominique Pepper, MD, Carter Milner, MD and John Saxon, MD on 'How to identify an interesting case', 'How to write an abstract', 'How to prepare a poster', and 'How to prepare an oral presentation.' On Day Two, Sumanth Daram, MD, Jose Subauste, MD and Jim Wilson, MD described avenues for abstract presentation and shared their personal experiences on how they launched their research careers.
These workshops set the platform for residents and fellows to seek out interesting case reports and discuss them with their peers, fellows and attendings. The chief residents of 2011/2012 strongly supported and encouraged residents to submit abstracts to the 17th Annual Abstract Day Competition held October 28, 2011 at UMMC. A total of 58 high quality abstracts were accepted for presentation: 10 for oral presentations and 48 for poster presentations. Cory Carter, MD and Dane Ballard, MD won prizes in the Oral category and Barr Biglane, MD and Carter Milner, MD won prizes in the Poster category.
The momentum for scholarly activity increased with several residents presenting and winning prizes at Regional and National Competitions. Sushant Khaire, MD, Kamel Gharaibeh, MD and Laura Parks, MD represented UMMC at the Society of Clinic Investigation Meeting held in New Orleans February 9 - 11, 2012. Licy Yanes, MD, Dane Ballard, MD, Cory Carter, MD, Alycia Cleinman, MD, Sushant Khaire, MD, Arnoldo Lopez-Ruiz, MD and Dominique Pepper, MD represented UMMC at the Annual National Conference of the American College of Physicians - also held in New Orleans April 19 - 21, 2012.
Given the wealth of talent among residents and fellows, and strong faculty support, one can only anticipate that we will build on our successes achieved this past year. Scholarly activity is thriving at UMMC and we will continue to develop our residents and fellows into mature and competent clinical investigators.

It has been another exciting and challenging year for the Medicine Residency Program. We began the academic year by dealing with a new set of duty hours which limit interns to no more than 16 hours of continuous duty. We have had to be increasingly creative with our scheduling, handoffs, and coverage and with our efforts to teach ownership, initiative, and professionalism. We are up to the challenge and the year has gone well, in large part due to the efforts and commitment of the housestaff.
Recruiting went well again this year; the last three years have seen record numbers of applicants to our program and an increase in the numbers of U.S. schools represented in our classes. This year we matched a full complement of 22 categoricals including individuals from nine different U.S. schools...a record. Our current intern class, the largest in program history, scored in the top quarter of interns in the country on the In-Training Exam. With a newly developed Primary Care Track, designed by a Task Force led by Governor-Elect Dan Woodliff, ever-increasing interest in our program, high-quality individuals matching into the program, and a bright and dedicated group of Associate Program Directors on board, the future is very bright.
Finally, I'm very proud of the Associates Council. This has been a self-sustaining and self-motivating group for several years now and their level of involvement in Department activities, scholarly and research activities, and community service has been heartening and exciting to watch. Their dedicated efforts led to a record number of abstracts and presentations at our most recent competition and national recognition for several individuals. I have great confidence in the future leaders of Internal Medicine in Mississippi.

Dr. Brahan took his regional meeting to Tupelo and with the help of Dr. Frank Fortenberry, North MS Health Center, was pleased to have dinner at the Native Son Farm restaurant and introduce the attendees to Fred Ralston, MD, FACP. Dr. Ralston is the past president of National ACP and drove from Tennessee to support the MS Chapter in our effort to involve our north Mississippi membership. Dr. Ralston presentation was an intriguing history of the ACP organization. The group of 30 was served a gourmet meal by Chef David Leathers. There are plans to return to Tupelo in the future.

At the Board of Governor's meeting last September, Dr. Michael Barr, Vice President for Practice Advocacy and Improvement, embarrassed a room full of ACP Governors over their lack of knowledge about ACP resources and services, which could be a tremendous help to many of our members. As you may or may not know, ACP recently established a new division that had previously been under the Advocacy office in Washington, D.C. In the process we promoted Dr. Barr to Vice President of the new division. The College realized that not only do internists need the knowledge from our CME and leadership from our advocacy and public policy division, but in the coming world of medicine, we need help in managing our practices. The complexity of managing our offices, navigating the insurance companies, adapting to EHR's, the medical home plus the ethical challenges that we all face required more resources and expertise. As many of our Governors learned, most of the ACP's resources can be found on the ACP website, ACPOnline.org.
For example, did you know that ACP can help you become a Medical Home. The College has been a long time leader in defining and implementing the medical home concept. This is one of the big ideas in delivering top flight health care, and lower the cost of care. Physicians are under the gun to deliver better care, but at a lower cost. There is potential improvement in physician reimbursement, as well. The College has put together the Medical Home Builder, an interactive web based reference system that will allow the doctor to analyze their own practice and see where they need improvement. This is a system that allows you to find your strengths and weaknesses and give references on how to make the necessary changes. The references are the most robust part of the Medical Home Builder and provide an evidence based approach. It is not just a feel good system, but a way to find ways to improve practices, that have been shown to work.
For those physicians, who operate a clinic lab, ACP has a laboratory proficiency program. This program will comply with requirements for CLIA regulation, and it provides an easy way to submit data to Medicare. In addition this program will help you improve your laboratory operation through references, CME, and proficiency testing.
Many of you are installing or shopping for an EHR system. The ACP is currently deeply involved in the regulatory side of EHR and recently commented on the proposed Meaningful Use 2 Criteria. As a member of the Medical Informatics Committee, I participated in this process and I can assure you that we have some amazing expertise in the College. For this reason comments from ACP are taken very seriously by CMS.
If you have not purchased an EHR, then you must visit the resources available on the ACP website. There are guides for finding the right vendor, how to meet Meaningful Use 1 criteria and get paid for your efforts, privacy issues, e-prescribing, 5010, and ICD-10(and solutions). Visit AmericanEHRPartners, a collaboration with ACP and other sources to provide a web based site to discuss a lot of the problems related to the EHR. If you went to IM2012, there were several courses dealing with electronic medical records, that could potentially make you a better purchaser and user of these new and evolving tools.
We have two new programs designed to foster quality improvement in diabetes and cardiovascular risk. These programs require enrolment and provide a web based system to promote the whole office to improve performance in these areas. CME and MOC credit is available.
ACP has always maintained a guide on medical ethics. The latest Guide Book was turned out this year and contains timely positions on managed care, physician and industry relations, human rights, end of life care, and research ethics. Case studies from ACP are published on Medscape and provide a way to work through a problem rather than simply look it up. These cases are suitable for group discussion at medical staff or department meeting. You can get to the site from ACPOnline.org.
ACP furnishes for members downloadable patient education tools, DVD's, and written materials. Much of this comes from the ACP Foundation but can be acquired via the internet over ACPOnline.org. Reprints for patients from "In the Clinic" in the Annals are available.
As you can see most of this activity can be found on the internet at ACPOnline.org. This site has recently upgraded its search engine and can find information throughout the ACP website in any of its twenty four domains and find the information you need. These domains include MDSAP, the many ACP Guidelines, advocacy, position papers, and governance, among others. In the Fall an improved navigation system will be unveiled making the website even more useful.
