I am a faculty member in the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Rural Medicine Programs, through which MGH has been honored to maintain longstanding partnerships with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Indian Health Service (IHS) in South Dakota.
I am writing to communicate an emergency call for volunteer healthcare professionals at sites within the Great Plains Area IHS.
In the best of times before the pandemic, counties on tribal lands in the Great Plains have experienced the nation’s lowest life expectancies. Resource-challenged IHS hospitals are now responding to an active COVID surge in this region, wherein per-capita case and death rates are the highest in the country. State- and county-level data underscore the disparate impact of the pandemic on American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Medical volunteers are urgently requested at Great Plains Area IHS sites. Qualifying volunteers are physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and respiratory therapists who are currently licensed in any of the 50 US states. Please note the following:
- Volunteers will likely be assigned to inpatient duties for COVID and non-COVID adult patients, but clinical needs vary and may include critical or pediatric care.
- We are not currently accepting medical volunteers who are in residency training programs, but we welcome volunteers who are in fellowship training programs.
- We anticipate that travel expenses will be eligible for reimbursement.
If you are interested in volunteering, sign up here. Your information will only be shared with Great Plains Area IHS sites and academic partners involved in this COVID response. Please direct questions to firstname.lastname@example.org.
