I have been involved in many diverse leadership roles that would allow me to serve as Governor. If elected, there are several outstanding initiatives established previously which I would like to continue, including our support of the state’s medical schools and internal medicine residency programs. There has been excellent participation by students and residents in the ACP which I strongly support. I would hope to have more practicing internists act as mentors and interact with trainees in other roles. We will also need to support young providers through the Council of Early Career Physicians, aiming to assist them in working through the multitude of issues facing them. I also would strive to increase the diversity of young providers participating in the Council and encourage them into chapter leadership roles. Finally, I hope to serve the chapter in growing the membership of ACP and encouraging members to advance through Fellowship.

Areas of Professional Interest and Expertise: General Internal Medicine, including Consultative Medicine; Medical Education
Over the course of my career, I have practiced general internal medicine in different regions of the country, military and civilian, and in Iowa for the past twenty-two years. I've spent a lifetime in clinical practice and in medical education, primarily in the community and in collaboration with the University of Iowa, and I believe firmly in the importance of the seamless integration of clinical practice with medical education across the entire spectrum, from undergraduate medical education through the provision of CME to practicing physician. My primary reason for seeking election as Governor is that the American College of Physicians has always exemplified to me the ideals we hold most highly in medicine: the care of our patients, high standards of scholarship, and demonstration of the highest ideals of professionalism and service to our fellow humans. I would be honored to be able to give something back to the organization that has done so much to help form and define my professional life.
