Daniel P. Allen, MD, FACP
Dan Allen was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Paul and Arma Jo Allen. He attended Creighton University on a four year Presidential Scholarship and graduated Cum Laude in 1979 with a BS in Biology. While at Creighton he met his wife, Marcia, who was in the BS Nursing program at Creighton graduating in 1980. They were married between Dr. Allen's first and second year of medical school training. She worked as a nurse at the University of Iowa Stroke unit while Dr. Allen completed his medical degree at the University of Iowa, College of Medicine.
Dr. Allen went on to complete his residency training at University of Iowa/ VA Hospital Internal Medicine Residency in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon graduation in 1986 he was awarded Internal Medicine Resident of Year award and the Phillip Schropp award. He joined Des Moines Internal Medicine Associates-Drs. Schissel, Richards, Stuart, and Craig, in the practice of general internal medicine. In 1988 he became part of Iowa Health Physicians (IHP) with the merging of several physician groups including Dr. Charlie Gutenkauf's and Dr. Mark Purtle's original internal medicine group.
As a member of the Iowa Health Physicians, Dr. Allen has served numerous years on the regional Practice Management Committee as a member and chair, on the statewide Physician Executive Committee as member and chair, on the Board of Iowa Health Physicians as member and chair. He has served as a Regional Medical Director for Iowa Health Physicians for 5 years. In January of this year he was appointed Regional Vice President/Medical Director of Iowa Health Physicians and Clinics which in the central Iowa region includes 261 physicians and advanced practitioners and 59 clinics. In addition he is a member of the Iowa Health Des Moines management and senior team.
Prior to Dr. Allen's most recent administrative duties he has practiced full time in general internal medicine while providing important leadership in the development of a hospitalist program and orthopedic consult service with protocol driven preoperative and postoperative care leading to decreased surgery cancelations due to lack of pre op planning, decreased length of stay and decreased lab and blood product utilization. Dr. Allen feels particularly fortunate to have such a talented group of internal medicine partners that contribute greatly to the success of these endeavors and provide excellent patient care. He currently continues to practice half time with his expanded administrative roles.
Dr. Allen is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He has served as the Director of Ambulatory Medicine rotation for the Des Moines Internal Medicine residency training program-working with first year residents in outpatient practice. He also serves as an attending staff on the general internal medicine service. He was selected as Teacher of the Year in 1996. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Allen was selected as the top General Internal Medicine physician in Des Moines 2008. He has completed the Iowa Health System Physician Leadership Academy and has successfully completed the Certified Physician Executive (CPE) designation offered by the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives.
r. Allen and Marcia very much enjoy their family of four sons -Matthew, Garrett, Eric and David, one daughter-in-law, Shelli, and soon to be daughter-in-law, Michelle, and grandsons Isaac and Jack. In his free time he enjoys wine tasting and boating, but not at the same time! He is an active member of St. Francis of Assisi parish as a Lecture and Eucharistic minister.
