Governor's Message - Dr. David Anderson

The Atlantic Provinces Chapter held another successful annual meeting in Halifax November 16-17, 2018.

The Friday evening provided over 40 student and resident trainees the opportunity to meet with our faculty to discuss career opportunities in medicine. Special thanks to Dr. Mary-Margaret Keating, Dr. Colin Van Zoost, Dr. Nabha Shetty and Dr. Ian Epstein for generously giving their time to meet with our Dalhousie learners.

Saturday, we had an excellent education event with informative plenary presentations from Dr. Van Zoost, Dr. David Juurlink and Dr. Daniel Smyth. This was followed by e-poster presentations from Saint John, St John's and Halifax. We were pleased to be video linked to Memorial, Saint John and Moncton throughout the day. It was great to see almost 80 students, residents and practicing internal medicine specialists registered for our educational meeting on Saturday.

Thank you to the Planning Committee Chair, Dr. Ian Epstein, and to committee members Dr. Pat Bergin, Dr. Euiseok Kim, Dr. Joffre Munro, Dr. Christine Orr, Ms. Sarah Lane, and Dr. Kabi Thanapaalasingham. Thank you to the speakers and to all the attendees. Thank you also to our Platinum Sponsor, Bayer, and our Silver Sponsor, NovoNordisk.

Mark your calendars for October 2-5, 2019 as our annual meeting collaborates with the annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. A reminder that the 2019 ACP Internal Medicine Meeting takes place in Philadelphia April 11-13, 2019.

It is with great pleasure that I announce our chapter's governor-elect – Brian G. Moses, MD, FACP. Dr. Moses is a General Internist working in Yarmouth. Dr. Moses has been a strong advocate for the ACP and regularly attends its national meeting. He brings great insight and experience to the Governor's role and the Atlantic Chapter will be very well served under his leardership. Dr. Moses will be commencing his term in April 2020.

I am proud to announce that our Chapter has once again received an ACP Chapter Excellence Award! Thank you to all members and volunteers for your ongoing support and contributions. I encourage you to maintain your support of the ACP and become more active in our chapter. Please email me to discuss ways you can be involved david.anderson@dal.ca.

Wishing you all the best for the holidays and the New Year!

ACP AS ADVOCATE

Did you know that the ACP is highly involved in advocacy? Keep up to date with the ACP Advocate Newsletter.

There are many resolutions brought forth for consideration by the Board of Governors. I encourage members to visit www.acponline.org/advocacy and send me your feedback to david.anderson@dal.ca. The Canadian Governors have the opportunity to discuss and vote on resolutions and policy during annual meetings of the Board of Governors.

Visit the Advocacy in Action page for a list of resources and events to help educate and promote action by US policy makers, legislators and others on issues of importance to internists and their patients.

One such resource is the Climate Change Toolkit – a resource to help reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in your practice –click to learn more.
