Renee Y. Carter, MD, MPH, FACP

Candidate Statement: In my 31 years as an internal medicine specialist, I have worked in several different sectors of primary care — academic, group, for-profit, nonprofit, and even one year in locums tenens. These experiences informed me of the challenges and joys of being a primary care physician. I will bring these diverse viewpoints to my role as Governor of Virginia and my participation on the Board of Governors. I worked in the nonprofit sector and that influenced my ability to provide patient-centered care in spite of daily threats to our sustainability. As a partner in a group practice, I learned collegiality and the art of compromise. This diversity in my professional career not only reflects the community of internal medicine specialists in Virginia but also the American College of Physicians of which I have been a proud member for over a decade.

Candidate Statement: While in training, my best mentors were leaders in the ACP and I quickly recognized it as the most reliable source of excellent, evidence-based information available. ACP is my professional home. It has been my pleasure to be involved for over 20 years. As an associate professor, associate program director, director of women’s health and serving twelve years on state ACP Councils, I have developed valuable skills to lead and also a deep commitment to giving back to the organization and the lives we’ve touched. There are myriad gender and race issues as well as major developments in how internist-driven care is accessed and delivered which ACP will tackle over the next five years. If elected, during my term as Governor, I will drive our local agenda and the issues that are important to us to the national ACP level. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you.
