Recognizing PQRI Problems and Improving the Program

CMS has conducted a detailed review of the 2007 PQRI program experience. Approximately 15% of physicians attempted to participate in the PQRI 2007 program, with CMS determining that about half participated successfully and, thus, earned a bonus. While CMS has not released participation/success figures by specialty, many internists who attempted to participate experienced a variety of major problems, including: not qualifying for a bonus they thought they earned; receiving a bonus payment amount less than expected; and being unable to access their reporting and performance scores on the CMS secure website. ACP has repeatedly urged CMS to promptly address the problems experienced by internists and many other physicians. ACP Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, John Tooker, MD, MBA, FACP, recently participated in a meeting with the CMS Acting Administrator, Kerry Weems, where the agency announced the release of a report that documents the PQRI 2007 program experience and outlines solutions to a number of the problems. While ACP commends CMS for making recent improvements based on the lessons learned from early program experience, the College is pursuing additional improvements to the program to make it more viable for internists to participate and earn the bonus.
