CMS to Release a Comparative Billing Report on Evaluation and Management Services
On March 27, 2013, CMS will release a national provider Comparative Billing Report (CBR) addressing Evaluation and Management Services.
The reports, which will be distributed to physicians who bill significant volumes of outpatient E&M services (coded with CPT 99201 through 99215), will contain data-driven tables and graphs, to illustrate and compare a physician’s E&M billing patterns to those of their peers located in the state and across the nation.
The individual E&M reports will be available only to the physicians who receive them. To ensure privacy, CMS presents only summary billing information. No patient or case-specific data is included. These reports are designed to be an educational tool that helps physicians better understand applicable Medicare billing rules and improve the level of care they furnish to their Medicare patients; it is not an auditing tool.
The CBRs for E&M services have companion reports available online, showing the state and national statistics for the same categories of services. The companion reports can be viewed at www.cbrservices.com; once there, follow the link to the “Interactive Map for State and National Averages.” The contractor’s website also features Frequently Asked Questions, for E&M services and other types of medical services.
