CMS is Extending the 2013 Annual Participation Enrollment Period
CMS, in an announcement released late in 2012, is extending the 2013 Annual Participation Enrollment Period through Friday, February 15, 2013. However, the effective date for any participation status change during the extension remains January 1, 2013, and will be in force for the entire year.
Contractors will accept and process any participation elections or withdrawals made during the extended enrollment period that are post-marked on or before Thursday, February 14, 2013.
The three options regarding continuing to participate under Medicare are:
- be Medicare participating;
- be Medicare non-participating; or
- to opt out of Medicare entirely
While most physicians are Medicare participating, the College realizes that some may want to assess all their options. The American Medical Association (AMA) maintains a document providing a comprehensive description - and their implications - of the each of the three participation options.
