Under the Affordable Care Act, Congress created the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) with the authority and direction to “test innovative payment and service delivery models to reduce program expenditures, while preserving or enhancing the quality of care” for those who get Medicare, Medicaid or CHIP benefits.

CMMI’s mandate gives it great flexibility in selecting and testing innovative payment and service delivery models and enables the center to work with programs to better serve beneficiaries.

The CMMI is part of a broader effort by CMS and other federal agencies to support and help clinicians and other health care providers deliver higher quality care. With the help of the CMMI, CMS is working to transform our fragmented fee for service healthcare system into a system that provides seamless, coordinated care for beneficiaries that will ultimately improve quality and reduce costs.

ACP has assembled a collection of information and materials to assist you in learning about and understanding initiatives set forth by the CMMI:

• Comprehensive ESRD Care Initiative -In February 2013, CMMI released a new shared savings program for providerswho treat Medicare patients with end-stage renal disease. Through thisinitiative CMS will partner with health care providers and suppliers totest the effectiveness of a new payment and service delivery model inproviding beneficiaries with patient-centered, high-quality care.Letters of intent are due March 15 and applications are due May 1.
• Health Care Innovation Challenge - In May, 2012 the CMS Innovation Center announced its first group of awardees under this program.
• Innovation Advisors Program - On October 18, 2011 the CMS Innovation Center announced this program to help health professionals deepen skills that will drive improvements to patient care and reduce costs. The Innovation Advisors Program will support individuals who can test and refine new models to drive delivery system reform.

• Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) Initiative - On September 28, 2011 the CMS Innovation Center announced the CPC, a new four year initiative intended to foster collaboration between public and private health care payers to strengthen primary care in the U.S. On July 26, 2012, practice application period ended.
  On May 23, ACP hosted a conference call on the Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative with Richard J. Baron, MD, MACP Group Director, Seamless Care Models, CMMI and selected geographic areas involved in the initiative. You can view Dr. Baron's presentation.

• Bundled Payments for Care Improvement - On August 23, 2011 the CMMI announced this initiative which seeks to improve patient care through payment innovation that fosters improved coordination and quality through a patient-centered approach.
