Resolution: Survey of Associates Regarding Resident Work Hours

Whereas, the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) along with the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and Public Citizen have recently petitioned the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to regulate resident work hours, and
Whereas, legislation has been introduced by Representative Conyers from Michigan's 15th District which calls for the governmental regulation of resident work hours, and
Whereas, currently, resident work hours are monitored and regulated by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and
Whereas, accurate and unbiased information on resident work hours is needed in order for the ACP-ASIM to fully understand the scope of the problem as it pertains to Internal Medicine residents and subspecialty fellows and recommend and support appropriate actions, therefore be it
Resolved, that the ACP-ASIM reaffirm its commitment to improving and maintaining safe working conditions for Internal Medicine residents and fellows, and be it further
Resolved, that the ACP-ASIM fully support the efforts of the American Medical Association in addressing and reforming resident work hours including the exploration of using the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as an advocate for resident work hour reform, and be it further
Resolved, that the ACP-ASIM anonymously survey its Associate members on the quality of the Associates' working environment including working hours.
