Overview of MKSAP 12 Update
The two major components of the MKSAP 12 Update are the Syllabus, containing the Update content, and the Self-Assessment component, containing 120 new multiple-choice questions, answers, and critiques. MKSAP 12 CD-ROM users may wish to access the Update content from within the context of the core MKSAP 12 program. To do so, simply replace your existing MKSAP 12 CD-ROM with this one (your MKSAP 12 Update CD-ROM). Sections with related Update content will now show "Update Available" buttons. Clicking on Update Available will open new windows containing the Update content. The 120 new multiple-choice questions can only be viewed through the Update program.

Special Notes

  • AOL Users - Before you begin, you must set your default browser to either Internet Explorer 5.5+ or Netscape 4.78+ (6.2.3+ is recommended)--the AOL browser will not work with this program. To do so, simply open the browser you'd like to use and when you are asked if you want to make it your default browser, select "Yes." For more information, consult AOL help.
  • This software uses your Web browser to view content located on the CD-ROM. You are not required to connect to the Internet.
  • This software uses a special feature of your Web browser called "cookies" to store your answers. These must be enabled for the program to work properly (this is the standard setting for all browsers). Manual deletion of cookies will result in the permanent loss of your answers.

Navigating with the Table of Contents
  • The expansible/collapsible Table of Contents is displayed in the left-hand frame on your screen in a tree-like format, providing a constant reference point for your location within the MKSAP 12 Update.
  • The top of the frame shows two tabs representing the two components of the program: Update Content and Self Assessment
The 13 disciplines covered in the MKSAP 12 Update are shown for each. Within Update Content, each discipline icon branches into icons that represent chapters. Each chapter icon branches into icons that represent levels of headings within the chapter. In the Self-Assessment material, the items available for each discipline are listed. To view pages/items in the right-hand frame, click on a closed icon or heading title.
  • NOTE: If the content of a title you wish to open in the Table of Contents exceeds the length of the Table of Contents frame, you may use the scroll bar to view additional information that is out of view. To view titles that exceed the width of the frame, simply move your mouse pointer over the portion of the title that is displayed, and the entire title will appear.
Navigating with the PREVIOUS and NEXT Buttons
In addition to navigating the MKSAP 12 Update via the Table of Contents, you may also move from one page to another as you would in a book, by using the Previous and Next buttons located in the Syllabus Toolbar and Self-Assessment Toolbar.
Using the BACK Button on the Browser Toolbar
The BACK button in your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) retraces your navigation link history in the Table of Contents. Click on the BACK button to return to the last such link visited. (You may need to click on the BACK button multiple times.)

NOTE: When you view tables or figures by clicking on a table or figure reference in the text, you are not clicking on navigation links, but on "new window" links. BACK will not re-open windows that may have been closed. To review tables, figures, or key points, navigate with BACK to the page from which you opened the table, figure, or key points and then re-open the respective item.

Update Content (Syllabus) Toolbar
The MKSAP 12 Update Update Content is organized into 13 disciplines of Internal Medicine. Content includes tables and figures, key points to summarize main sections, and references to allow you to explore further topics of interest.

Self-Assessment Tools
The Self-Assessment Program
The MKSAP 12 Update is organized into 13 tests representing different disciplines of Internal Medicine. Each test contains one-best-answer multiple-choice questions.

Numbered items appear for each discipline in the left-hand frame on your screen. The right-hand frame contains an item heading, presentation, and question text. The shaded area below the question contains the answer options.

To answer questions, read the question text and answer options in the shaded frame. Use the scroll bars to the right to view text that is not visible in the frame shown. Select the best answer to each item by clicking on the radio button next to your desired answer option. You may change your answer at any point during the test, including after you have clicked on Answer

Answers and Critiques
Answers, critiques, and educational objectives are shown to provide valuable remediation and reference information. To view an answer, critique, and educational objective, click on Answer in the Self-Assessment Toolbar. Use the scroll bar to view text that is not visible.

The correct answer will always be displayed in bold. If you select an incorrect answer, your selection will be shown in red.

Test-Taking Tools
As in the Syllabus, you may navigate through the Self-Assessment Tests via the Table of Contents in the left-hand frame on your screen. You may also page through the tests by using the Previous and Next buttons in the Self-Assessment Toolbar.

The Test Status (CME) screen displays an Answer Sheet table with the test titles, question numbers (which link directly to the questions), your answers and the correct answers (if you have selected incorrect answers), percent correct, and the number of unanswered questions. If you complete a test and are eligible for CME, additional information and a form appear (see below). Use the scroll bar to view all test results.

Answer Loads the answer and critique for the item you are viewing into the shaded area on your screen. The correct answer appears in bold and an incorrect choice is shown in red.
Test Status (CME) Takes you to the CME Status screen, where you may check your eligibility for CME credit.
Previous Displays the previous question for the current test.
Next Displays the next question for the current test.
Print Allows you to print the screen you are viewing.
Test Status (Answer Sheet) and CME Tools
The CD-ROM system automatically calculates your scores for each test. You may change your answers or retake the tests as often as you like in order to achieve a minimum test score, which is a score significantly above the chance level, for CME credit.

Upon completion of each test, the system determines if you are eligible for CME credit. If so, you are presented with an option to select the exact number of hours you actually spent on that test (to the nearest quarter hour and up to a maximum determined by the ACP–ASIM for each discipline). A CME submission form will appear at the bottom of the Answer Sheet, along with instructions for transmitting the CME request to the ACP–ASIM in one of three different ways. The Answer Sheet also includes several features specifically designed to assist you with assessing your areas of strength and weakness.

Test Status (CME) Calculates and displays your answers (and correct answers) and scores for all tests.
View Summary Provides a summary of all tests completed in the form of a bar chart comparing results among all 13 disciplines.
Clear Answers Clears all answers for the test you are taking. A confirmation is required to complete this function.
CME Instructions Provides detailed instructions for obtaining CME.
Print this record Allows you to print a copy of the Answer Sheet for your records.
Submit for CME Submits your application for CME credit to ACP–ASIM electronically. NOTE: To submit your application for CME credit, you should answer every question in each test, score significantly above the guess level, complete the CME Submission form, select the actual number of hours spent completing each test, and have a live Internet connection.
Summary for MKSAP 12 Update
The Summary Sheet summarizes your test results. Running scores are made available as you make your way through the Self-Assessment Program. Running scores of less than 50% are indicated with red bars. Scores of 50% or greater, but below 80% are indicated with gold, and scores of 80% or above are indicated with green bars. The Summary Sheet also indicates the percentage of questions answered correctly and the number of unanswered questions.
View Details Navigates you back to the Answer Sheet/Test Status (CME).
Print this record Allows you to print the Summary Sheet.
