End-of-Life Care Panel publishes new papers
The College's End-of-Life Care Consensus Panel has begun publishing a series of papers on end-of-life and palliative care issues.
Over the next year or so, the panel is expected to publish a total of 12 papers. The papers will provide practical advice to clinicians who are not specialists in palliative care and who do not regularly care for dying patients. To date, the following papers have been published or are expected to be published shortly:
- The first paper of the series, "Discussing Palliative Care with Patients," was published in the May 4 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. An accompanying editorial from the panel, "Care at the End of Life: Guiding Practices Where There are No Easy Answers," was also published in that issue of Annals.
- A second paper, "A Consensus-based Approach to Palliative Care for Patients Who Lack Decision-making Capacity," was published in the May 18 issue of Annals.
- A third paper, "Pain Management in Patients with Advanced Cancer," is expected to be published in the July 5 issue of Annals.
More information about the panel is available on ACP-ASIM Online in the section on the College's Center for Ethics and Professionalism.
