Chapters urged to participate in Leadership Day
Building on last year's success, the College hopes to attract more than 200 attendees to the 12th annual ACP Leadership Day on Capitol Hill, May 18-19.
The event is a way to build the College's advocacy network by having members meet with members of Congress and their staff. Past Leadership Day sessions have been instrumental in stopping cuts in Medicare reimbursement and having the College's seven-year plan for universal coverage introduced as a bipartisan bill in both the House and the Senate.
This year's event will feature a new optional half-day training session on Tuesday morning, May 18, to help orient first-time attendees. The session will be followed by in-depth briefings by Capitol Hill representatives. On Wednesday, members meet with their congressional representatives. Chapters are encouraged to send one or more representatives and to set up meetings in advance with members of Congress who serve on key health committees or in leadership positions.
Members interested in attending should contact their Chapter Governor or Shuan Tomlinson in the College's Washington office.
Chapters present eight Laureate Awards
ACP chapters presented eight Laureate Awards to internists earlier this year.
Awardees generally have been Fellows for at least 15 to 20 years, with a long history of excellence and peer approval in the specialty of internal medicine.
Additionally, they should have served the College with distinction. The following individuals received the awards:
Colorado
Robert A Linden, FACP
Iowa
Steven Eyanson, FACP
Kenneth A. Hubel, FACP
Louisiana
Felix Gustave Rabito, FACP
John J.Walsh Sr., FACP
Mississippi
Larry B. Aycock, FACP
New Jersey
Leon G. Smith, MACP
North Carolina
Robert H. Bilbro, FACP
Cover the Uninsured Week slated for May 10-16
The College has joined other national health care organizations in supporting Cover the Uninsured Week, which will take place May 10-16. This Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative draws attention to the problem of the uninsured by holding public education and community events across the country.
Last year's event brought together more than 800 national and local groups (including close to a dozen ACP chapters), which together sponsored nearly 900 public events. In addition to holding community health fairs, educational forums and workshops, Cover the Uninsured Week organizers this year will feature health care providers who donate time to caring for patients without health insurance.
Some events will also offer medical screening for uninsured patients and opportunities for families to enroll in Medicaid and the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
For more information on holding Cover the Uninsured Week events, go online. You can also contact Kathy Heabel in the ACP Washington office at.
