GAP Risk Assessment System

The GAP risk assessment system is a clinical prediction tool that estimates prognosis in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It consists of two complimentary prognostic tools intended to inform, but not replace clinical judgment. First, the GAP index and staging system provides a simple screening method for determining the average risk of mortality of patients by GAP stage. Second, the GAP calculator provides an estimation of individual risk of mortality for those patients in whom a more precise estimation of risk may further inform patient care.

Please note: The DLCO, % predicted should be corrected for hemoglobin if available. Patients unable to perform the DLCO test include those patients for whom a DLCO test was ordered but the patient was unable to perform it due to respiratory limitations. If the DLCO test was not ordered or not performed due to non-respiratory limitations, the GAP risk assessment system may not be applied.

For further detail of the derivation and use of the GAP risk assessment system, please see Ley and colleagues' article (Ann Intern Med. 2012;156:684-91).
