Japan is New ACP-ASIM Chapter

ACP-ASIM is pleased to announce the establishment of a chapter in Japan.

The Japanese Society of Internal Medicine (JSIM) approached ACP-ASIM leadership in May 2000 with a request to coordinate the formation of an ACP-ASIM Chapter in Japan. In response to this request, ACP-ASIM created guidelines for the establishment of chapters outside the Americas, which were approved by the BOR in April 2002. JSIM leadership was then invited to submit a request for the establishment of a chapter. After reviewing this request, Japan was found to meet all criteria, including the existence of 200 active Fellows and Members, as well as an additional pool of internists and potential ACP-ASIM members to support the chapter in the future. The BOR approved JSIM's request in October 2002. This is the first new College chapter developed outside North America since Venezuela became a chapter in 1992.

Kiyoshi Kurokawa, MD, PhD, MACP, has been appointed by Dr. Sara Walker, ACP-ASIM President, to serve as interim Governor and to lead the chapter through its initial stage of development. An election will be held this summer to identify a regular four-year Governor.

The College is excited about this new opportunity and looks forward to welcoming its Japanese members into the chapter structure, and to having a Governor from Japan on the Board of Governors.
