ACP Smart Medicine Updates

By Deborah Korenstein, MD, FACP

ACP Smart Medicine is continually updated as new practice-changing guidelines are released to ensure you get quick access to the most current evidence-based recommendations.

Latest Screening Recommendations for Primary Care

Really, no pelvic exam?

The ACP recently recommended against pelvic exams (outside of recommended cervical cancer screening) to screen for disease. Many patients and providers were surprised by this recommendation. Put the screening pelvic exam into context by going to the Screening section of the Ovarian Cancer module in ACP Smart Medicine. (Note that the ACP guideline is consistent with a USPSTF guideline which recommended against screening for ovarian cancer in the general population.)

Targeted AAA screening

Screening for AAA has been recommended for high-risk patients for several years. The USPSTF recently updated its screening recommendation. Check the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm module in ACP Smart Medicine for the latest recommendations.

Carotid artery stenosis who to screen?

Carotid artery stenosis is a risk factor for stroke but general screening is not recommended, as the USPSTF recently re-recommended. Find out which high risk patients DO need screening in the Screening section of the Carotid Artery Stenosis module in ACP Smart Medicine.
