Figure 3. The effects of length of stay in determining whether the inpatient census or the number of admissions is the limiting factor in determining a hospitalist's workload. Assume that a hospitalist has a maximum workload cap of 13 inpatients or 6 admissions per day. When the length of stay exceeds 3 days, the hospitalist will exceed the census cap first. When the length of stay is 2 days or fewer, the hospitalist will exceed the admissions cap first.
