Joseph E Johnson Award Recipient

Lisa L. Ellis, MD

The Council of Associates formerly administered the Joseph E Johnson Leadership Award. The Board of Regents established it as a national award in 2003. The award recognizes Associate Members of the College who have demonstrated qualities that exemplify the College's mission "to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine." The award is announced at Convocation, with the actual presentation at the Associates and Medical Students Recognition Reception.

Dr. Lisa Ellis' involvement with the ACP began as a student at the Medical College of Virginia. She was a driving force in the student internal medicine organization, ACP Club Med. Under her leadership, an array of programs was developed for 1st through 3rd year students to introduce them to the rewards of a career in internal medicine. The ACP Club Med was recognized for those efforts with a 2001 Evergreen Award. Dr. Ellis served on the Governor's Council, representing the students of Virginia's three medical schools. She also helped organize the Regional Internal Medicine Symposium and Competition, which led to a 2002 Evergreen Award. Dr. Ellis was then selected to represent the Associates of Virginia on the Governor's Council. She was on the program committee for the 2003 Virginia Chapter Meeting. She was co-director of the Associates' Day Abstract Competition twice. During her final year of Residency she served as Director of Recruitment on the Governor's Council.

Dr. Ellis a native of Sioux Falls and graduated in Speech Pathology with a BS from USD. She has a Master's degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison and then went on to administration and teaching in Virginia in the area of swallowing disorders. She completed medical school and residency in Virginia, with a specialty in Women's Health. This is a combined program utilizing Psychiatry, Gynecology and Internal Medicine training.

Dr. Ellis is currently at Women's Health at Sioux Valley Internal Medicine. She enjoys singing with the Cathedral Choir. Her husband is completing a Residency in Pathology and will do a one-year fellowship in Dermpath next year in Virginia. They enjoy cooking, gardening, camping, hiking. She "loves being back in South Dakota!"
