Vision Statement
The principles of IM are the foundation of all Clinical Medicine. The discipline provides the core teaching in Medicine both in Undergraduate and Postgraduate training programs. Most IM subspecialty programs rely on the 3 core years of training in General IM to provide the basic foundation and building blocks. A mastery of these IM principles is paramount in the context of caring for patients presenting with multi-organ dysfunction and in the setting of an aging society with a tremendous chronic disease burden. The shift away from Generalist to subspecialty medicine has been alarming of late and starting to impact adversely in both community and academic settings. Hospitals and academic centers are unable to recruit "master clinicians" who do not confine themselves in a subspecialty discipline. Surely this realization of the imbalance between Generalists and Subspecialty should be given priority in our training programs, universities and government agencies. Societal needs demand a more equitable balance of trainees across all disciplines. The current trend will lead to the disenfranchisement of community and academic hospitals and an increase in the fragmentation of health care not to mention escalating costs. ACP and the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine have been major advocates in supporting the principles of maintaining a healthy balance of Generalists and Subspecialties to ensure the optimal care of our patients.

Vision Statement
Our Atlantic Chapter of over 300 members has a well established record of advancing the goals and vision of the ACP including being recognized leaders in education, advocacy, and enhanced career satisfaction for internal medicine and its subspecialties. By setting an Atlantic regional course we can further the American College of Physicians "A Vision for the ACP in 2015". Areas for discussion and prioritization would include enhancing the effectiveness and vitality of our ACP Chapter to assure that the number of specialists in all fields of internal medicine is congruent with the number needed to effectively meet healthcare needs of our region, to improve the access to care and eliminate regional disparities, to develop and implement effective models of health care delivery and financing, to increase the number of new members, to improve retention among current members, and to focus on involving medical students and residents in College programs.
