Dear Dr. Kim,
On behalf of the American College of Physicians, representing more than 116,000 doctors of internal medicine and medical students in the United States and abroad, I am writing to express the College's support for the WHO "3 by 5" initiative. ACP is gravely concerned about the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic throughout the world. We wish to commend the WHO for leading the campaign to have at least 3 million people, who are infected with AIDS in developing and middle-income countries, on antiretroviral treatment (ART) by the end of 2005.
We are particularly pleased to see that the WHO HIV/AIDS program focuses on evidence-based health sector interventions; a focus that the College shares. We also applaud WHO efforts for the development of regional technical resource networks so that country needs are more closely matched with local technical expertise and resources.
We understand that as a national medical association one of our most important contributions may be to help raise physician awareness about the global HIV/AIDS epidemic and the WHO initiative to address it. The American College of Physicians looks forward to working in partnership with other national and international medical associations to achieve the goals of the "3 by 5" initiative. We begin by sharing this letter of support with our colleagues at the American Medical Association, the British Medical Association, the World Medical Association, and others. Together we can provide access to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment services for all who need them and help stop the spread of this dreaded disease.
Sincerely,
Charles K. Francis, MD, FACP, FACC
